Looking for suggestions here. Pulling the trans. Cannot get the top bolt out of the starter. It doesn't appear rusted. I can get an open end wrench on it but cannot get it to move. Not a lot of room with the headers but can get at it with wrench. Any ideas?

You can replace your starter with a newer gear drive starter from a 90's model bronco with the appropriate style transmission. A slight rewire is necessary, but the starters last longer, require less battery and are about half the weight. Because of their smaller size they are great with headers and are also less affected by heat.

well you would have to have a large hole in the firewall and the passenger torque box to go that route and then i don't think you would be worried about just changing a transmission :D

Got it. Trans is out. Damn that FMX is heavy trying to wedge it out between the headers while lying on your back.

Jack stands are sweet.

Motor mounts.

It allows the engine to rock just a bit front to back to help with lining up the trans during install.

Just be sure to support the trans while Connected to the engine. Floor Jack piece of wood and my belly and a lot of wrestling. It was what I image wresting an alligator would be like. If there were no headers it would be much easier.

Thanks keep us posted on your progress.

Did you get the clutch cable issue ironed out?

I'm only a couple of parts behind you to get it done.

Flywheel, cross member and cable.

Paul
Well Mustangs Unlimited sent the wrong cable. After what seemed like a decade they sent me an RGA to send it back. They have the correct cable on order and will send it out as soon as it comes in. They estimated 1 week. I hope this is accurate. I got everything cleaned up after trans removal. Got the flywheel mounted and the clutch mounted. I'm ready to test fit the bell housing next but would like the cable so I can plan proper routing.

On the engine, just for piece of mind I did support the front and back of the engine with jack stands and a block of wood that would allow me to rock it front to back about 1/2" either way. Just wanted to be safe.

Interesting, will the ACDELCO 3371036 work?

Boy I am dreading the topic of the starter. I have heard of people having a lot of problems finding a starter to fit. I have also heard you can reuse the original style starter along with a number of folks trying all kinds of different ones. My plan is to reuse my starter as it appears to have been very recently replaced. If/when it dies I will look at a different option. Heat is not too much of a concern as I had my headers coated on the outside with Cerakote and the inside done with insulkote to keep the heat down and it works great.

There is a special boxed in wrench for Ford starters sold my Snap On and others for getting the top bolt if you don't have a 2' extension.

Hope the new parts were balanced correct for your engine could be a little shaky.

David
Flywheel is correct. 28 oz imbalance 157 tooth.

Well my plan to use the original starter just went down the road. It won't fit. Hits the oil pan. I've heard starter from fox body works. Anyone have any ideas?
