There is a special boxed in wrench for Ford starters sold my Snap On and others for getting the top bolt if you don't have a 2' extension.

Hope the new parts were balanced correct for your engine could be a little shaky.

Well, I'll be damned. Now that you mention this, it dawned on me what those old curvy wrenches were for. I never actually owned one but would see them every so often and wonder about them.

I always just used the long extensions.

From my dealings with this in the past, The type of starter needed is dependent on the flywheel. The original style starters were designed to be used on 164t flywheels. They have a manual trans and an auto trans version of these. I would guess you need to install a 157t flywheel that has a 28oz balance for this conversion. Then you would use a newer starter compatible with what you have. I'm assuming a manual trans fox body mustang. 83-91. the 92-95 mustangs used a nicer gear reduction starter but they are much more expensive and require some additional wiring. The 83-91 starters are identical to your original starter in regards to wiring.

Cool. Thanks. I did use a 157 tooth 28 oz flywheel. I will do some checking on the starters you suggested. Honestly there is no way I would tackle this project without the knowledgable support on this forum. I appreciate it a lot. And I just used a couple of extensions put together to get that bolt out.

if it is a Cleveland, then a 95 Bronco starter for the 351 W with the same transmission will work. You will have to run a wire to excite the solenoid at the starter from the switched side of the stock starter solenoid and move the positive cable for the starter to the opposite side from the factory connection

Dam the bad luck.

Hitting the oil pan? The starter motor body is too large?

I was hoping the auto trans starter would work like stated on the MDL site says.

The newer gear reduction bodies are a little smaller motor diameter if that helps.

The 94 mustang does not specify auto or man and is Motorcraft SA769ARM.

The 95 Bronco 351W/302 uses Motorcraft SA769ARM auto or SA793RM for man.

I searched the web for an hour to find someone that stated what starter they used

for a 351C/T5 and got no testimony to report.

I guess buying a starter from the local parts house to try out with a return policy would

be best for the trial and error PIA program, ugg.

I wish you luck and I'm pulling for ya!

Jeff you mention above a Bronco with the same transmission? I'm putting a T-5 in the car. I think the 95 bronco had a Mazda M5 Trans? Will that work? It is a 351 Cleveland in my car.

Starter body is too large due to the smaller flywheel (157 tooth Vs 164 tooth) so the bell brings it in closer to the block and it just hits before you can line up the bottom hole. I am going to run to some parts places today and check out some options. I took some good measurements so I can hopefully tell if it will fit before I buy it. I will let you know.

I mean automatic or manual. Probably should have said same style transmission. Cleveland manual transmission cars had 164 tooth flywheels IIRC, if you have converted yours to use a 157, then you will need to find an application that used a 157 tooth flywheel, which might not be the Full size Bronco, not sure what the 95 5.0 Mustang used.

What transmission are you running?

Well no luck finding local. Found one 75 miles away for $150 plus $75 core and no they won't accept my old style as the core. So my choice was spend 3 hours of time and $225 and have the starter today or wait until Monday and pay $60 and have it delivered to my door. I ordered it.

I think you are spot-on with the choice.

I had to make an order to rockauto for other parts and

had them throw in that starter at $65.

Fingers crossed... I hate to break new ground when this

has been done B4 by other members!

Ciao

when pulling starters I tie an old ratchet strap around the starter and tie it to the shock tower brace. Once Unbolted, it holds the weight of the starter and you can untie it and lower it to the ground. reverse for installation.
That's a great idea thanks I'll have to sock that one away for the next time I need to do this.
