The annual ABATE-sponsored Merritt Island Motorcycle Toy Run from Merritt Island to Melbourne was today.

My daughter Shelby rode with me in this year's event.

Unfortunately, there was a terrible accident: making the left turn from 520 onto US-1, The guy directly in front of us seemed to be taking the turn a little too fast, ran wide...lost control and went up on the curb. He plowed into a crowd of about 15 spectators standing there, directly running over a woman and her infant before careening into the rest of the crowd. He layed it down about 15 yards into the grass.

The rider was frantic and ran over after getting up from the bike, ,the crowd was clearly startled and we stopped right at the curb to see if we could assist. The cops swarmed up instanly and shoed us on out of the way, so we continued on with the rest of the bikers.

I have not seen anything on the local news as of yet...I sure hope the lady and her baby were not seriously hurt. (although it sure looked like they were...lots of blood on the woman).

Put a damper on the day for us, and obviously for the victims.

wow sad situation. Just curious how FAST a person would feel the need to ride through a turn? Curious how fast the operator would need to go in order to lose control "in an intersection" with the responsibility of a rider AND PUBLIC?

a left turn is more natural than a right turn to right handed folks. Must have been a bike malfunction.

That's a horrible situation, especially when it's an event like this (a toy run) when it's all about bringing smiles and making people's days a bit more enjoyable, only to be marred with a terrible situation like this. Hopefully everyone involved comes out of this situation in good health and it doesn't muddy the the name of this worthwhile event for the future.

I think the guy just ran wide and inadvertantly hit the curb...which caused him to accidently roll back on the throttle, shooting him into the crowd. But I am just taking a WAG...the bike traffic was only going about 10 mph at the time.

It turns out the woman was airlifted to the hospital, in critical condition and operated on immediately.

The baby was airlifted to a different children's hospital...also in critical condition.

The woman's mother was also hit, taken to the hospital by ambulance and released later, cuts and bruises only.

This really sucks for those poor people...my heart goes out to them.

Unfortunately, the 22 year-old woman (the mother of the the 2-year old) died yesterday due to massive head trauma.

very sad.

That's very sad to hear, what a terrible outcome and to make it worse for her poor family, being so close to Christmas. Couldn't imagine anything worse than losing a family member or someone close to you at this time of year. Hope the outcome for the child is a better one, as this family has already endured enough. My heart goes out to them.

Thanks for the update I was hoping there would be as better outcome. Our days are numbered, we have to do our best to get our share of life here on the planet. Be careful out there!
