What in the world is this and where does it go???

I'm changing the transmission oil to my 71, pulled the pan and when i get to the filter i pull all the screws, when the filter drops this little piece falls with it and i see no possible place to put it back, did it came from inside the transmission? is the darn thing falling apart? can't put the filter or pan until i figure out where it goes, heeelp please

Never mind, i figured it out, it is some kind of a back flow preventor
