My wiring at the solenoid and regulator has seen better days. With the help of Midlife and Motorcity I am making some progress. My car is a 72 with rear defrost/center gauges/convenience group/tach. The harness area in question is pictured below.

72 wire harness.jpg

My questions if someone could assist are:

The wire identified as rear defrost runs across the top of the shock tower support and also plugs in the hood light. This is connected to a 20Amp circuit breaker that looks to be in rough shape. NPD advertises a 20Amp breaker for the convertable. Does anyone have a rear defrost car with this breaker?

The black and orange wire marked as unknown, does anyone know its use?

NPD and CJs circuit breakers would these work?

eddyW the one I have marked as alternator in the photo is part of the alternator harness and I have the replacement for that. The other wire marked as UNKNOWN goes back into the main harness and attaches to the same junction block as the alternator lead. Thanx, but I think it is not part of the alternator harness.

Brian,

I just looked at my car and it also has the wire marked unknown. My car has rear defrost and power windows. I have no idea how to trace it for you but willing to help if I can.

Don't know if this will help but there is an orange and black wire in the under dash harness for the rear defroster. It is the main wire that runs to the heating coils on the back glass. The harness that I have has P/N D1ZB-18C394 on that wire. I also have the rear defrost and that wire to the breaker. The gage and color appear to be the same as the wire that runs from the harness back to the rear window.

The breaker also services the Rear Seat Back Release Solenoids in Non-Convertibles. This is due to the high current draw of the solenoids. My car doesn't have the "Unknown" wire, and I lack the rear defrost option, so it seems likely as others have suggested that is what that wire is for.
