    Air Conditioner Compressor Brackets

I first saw this and thought I had the solution, but when I went to the Rickster to check, my pulleys weren't lining up. When I had things mocked up when I built the motor, the compressor belt lined up on the 3rd crank pulley and a stock style idler, but after removal to drop into the car and...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

As I noted last night, I've been working on the Rickster and getting things done. One thing I did was to install a coolant recovery tank. Gilbert Hale (mrgmhale) has a YouTube video on installing the coolant overflow tank () that I found very useful. I was able to use the upper bracket that...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

It's been a few weeks since I've posted an update, but I have been keeping busy working on the Rickster. Wiring is so non-photogenic, it's hard to get enthusiastic about the last bunch of wires I just tied together. Still, progress is being made. I went with a Ron Francis Express wiring kit...

Are there differences in the 1973 steering columns?

Thanks, Dave. Don did have one, and it's on its way already. If something doesn't work out, though, I'll give you a shout. :)

Are there differences in the 1973 steering columns?

Dave!! You da' man!!! Yours looks exactly like mine, except for the casting number. I expect that if compared side by side with a pair of calipers in hand, we'd find some minor differences in dimensions. I now know that the replacement one I got is close enough to be easily mistaken for the...

Are there differences in the 1973 steering columns?

I tried to add a couple washers to space the turn signal switch out enough so that the hazard switch wouldn't bind, but unfortunately, when it was spaced out enough, the turn signal handle could not be screwed into the switch. I am thinking that there were changes to that piece in 73. Still if...

Are there differences in the 1973 steering columns?

Thanks, Midlife. I am wondering if I can fit an extra washer or two under the turn signal switch to make it work. I may give that a try. Still, if anyone has a 1973 fixed column with the turn signal switch out and can check the part number in that casting, I would really appreciate knowing...

Are there differences in the 1973 steering columns?

As I noted in post #133 for the Rickster build, the turn signal switch was binding when assembled and I was going to finish chasing that rabbit later. Well, now its later, and I need to get it figured out. I discovered that it's the hazard switch bottoming out in the slot in the collar below...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Thanks, guys, for the positive feedback. When working alone, it's easy to get bogged down seeing every imperfection there might be. Your comments are very encouraging, letting me know that I'm doing it at least halfway right. Well, back to the tedium of auto electrical wiring. Keeping my...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

It's been a few weeks since I've posted an update, but I have been making progress. I got the rear decal "installed" and also the 351 Ram Air decals on the hood. I also got the package tray installed. I cut it out of masonite, cut out openings for the 4x10 speakers and then covered it...

    Name of Parts

I used the technique Chuck described above when redoing the front bumper on the Rickster and it works well. You can find pictures and a write-up of what I did in the Rickster build thread. It's on page 9, post #173. I hope that helps.

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

The engine is alive!!!!! I got the motor dropped back into the engine bay and the pressure test was successful. I got the fuel lines hooked up and built a small relay panel for the fuel pump that I mounted in the trunk, near the battery. I installed the AC condenser and lines. I also got...

Seeking info on the ‘73 Mach 1 dashboard stereo speaker

The dash speaker is a 5x7. I went with the Retrosound 507N speaker for the Rickster. I found that the speakers with the lugs on along the sides interfered with the bracket that it attaches to. I did need to add a couple of 1/4" deep spacers so that the face wouldn't touch the perforated...

Question for those that installed ClassicAutoAir

I just finished running the AC lines on the Rickster, and looking at my directions, they say "Based o DRIVERS SIDE compressor mount see illustrations for routing, which shows all the hosed running along the passenger side and passing along front of the motor to the compressor, but they also show...

Newly built engine is leaking coolant and I'm stumped

Well, I removed the passenger side headers and used the engine hoist to lift that side of the motor enough to remove the motor mount. Sure enough, there is a nice little trail of fluorescence from the bottom of the freeze plug to the oil pan rail. I could see a good way to replace it in the...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

Thanks, guys. I've been working on wiring up the back half of the car while waiting on the freeze plugs to arrive. They came in this morning, so this afternoon, I was able to get them replaced. I had tried to photograph the dye trail, but it wasn't showing up. I told my wife, and she...

The Rickster - a 73 Mach 1 work in progress

I've been working on the Rickster pretty steady, but it seems like sometimes it's two steps forward, one step back. I've got the fittings and cooling lines for the transmission sorted. Ialso built a relay panel for the fans, lights, etc. I also got the fuel system plumbing completed...

Newly built engine is leaking coolant and I'm stumped

The Dorman freeze plugs at AutoZone are very thin, with narrow flanges. The Milodon freeze plugs that I have on order are brass and about twice as thick as the Dorman freeze plugs. The flange is 2-3 times wider as well. I will clean the opening with sandpaper and use some RTV sealant around...

    I finally found my home!

Welcome from NE Tennessee. Nice looking car. The hood is fine. Not factory, but if you're happy with it, then it's fine. As far as clear coating the side stripes, check with the decal manufacturer. I know that the instructions for my stripes specifically say, don't clear coat.

Newly built engine is leaking coolant and I'm stumped

Thanks, guys. Today, I picked up the freeze plug from AutoZone. I wasn't happy with it. It was so thin, and more like a washer than a shallow cup. I also found that another freeze plug had a trail of flourescence leading from it. So it's two leaking freeze plugs. I've got a complete set of...
