My Car
1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1, 429 Super Cobra Jet, 4.11, Detroit Locker
I inspected three additional Mustangs today. Would like some feedback from forum members:

1) 1971 Mach 1, M Code (original motor), Bright Blue Metallic, C-6, Mach 1 Interior, AC; Needs exterior and trunk restoration, respray, exhaust, AC redone, motor rebuilt, tires, fuel system, wheels, shocks; all there. 105,000 miles on car. What is fair market value for such a Mach 1?

2) 1973 Coupe, rebuilt original 302, dark green, Florida car; solid; all there; owner asking $3,000 OBO.

3) 1972 Mach 1, wimbledon white, 351-4v, 4 speed top-loader, AC, needs complete restoration; most of the necessary replacement parts provided (New): pans, etc. Owner asking $5,000.00

Thanks ahead of time for any feedback you might provide on any of thrse three vehicles.

The 73 coupe is good for a driver

The 72 sounds like a good deal if you want to get into complete restoration again

and the 71 when you say trunk restoration....how deep a restoration? Deep enough for frame rails or just a cosmetic job?

It depends on what you want Tim. Without actually seeing the cars and going on a brief description is tough.

If you are looking for the one with the most potential value, probably the 72mach but that will likely require the most investment in time and possibly cash. If you want a quick clean-up and flip probably the 73. I would think the 71 and 72 are probably worth about the same, the 71 seems like it needs less work and the 72 has the parts, kind of a wash.

As others have said, it depends on what you're looking for and what you're planning on doing with it. From personal experience unless you have the equipement, time and experience to do most fo the work yourself, you'll sink more money buying a fixer up than if you spent the money up front and bought one someone else has restored. That's especially true for those fixer uppers having notable rust issues. Shop around, there are some really nice ones out there were people spent years and put 10's of thousands more into them than they're asking.

Of course some people like the challenge of fixing them up themselves, have the skills to do it and can probably can do it cheaper. If I had to do it over I would be buying someone else's money pit already completed. I had that opportuntity before I bought mine, he wanted 20K and it was CHERRY, he told me had over 30K in restoration costs in it over the last 3 years. At the time I thought he was stretching the truth. After working on my money pit I now have no doubt he had 30K in restoration into it; 20K up front would have been cheaper and given me a better Mustang. Not to say I don't love mine, I'm just offering advise from someone who's been down the path you're about to take.

Tim, I like the sound of door #3. The 4 speed is very desirable & would help to sell it quicker than an auto trans.

1. You won't get your money out of a coupe.

2. You won't get your money out of a coupe.

3. You might get your money out of the Mach I but probably not your time. Especially given the attention to detail in that is evident in the pictures of your previous work.
