1972 convertible with almost half a million miles 351c- T5 transmission for 24 MPG on the Hwy! Still has a few original parts on it- not many!

also have a 1975 Bricklin with less than 20k miles.
Found this forum while looking for information on a couple of ideas I have that I have had no joy with elsewhere.

Have a 72 with a 351c and a T5. Did the upgrade last summer and noticed last winter (and during the summer where it does not matter much) that the engine now runs quite a bit cooler- I put a 195 thermostatt in it. I know the old cardboard in front of the radiator trick. Something else I thought of that could also improve engine performance a bt would be to put a thermal clutch on the fan that would only run at high temps- I have seen these on newer cars. went to Zutozone hoping to find something but of course since this was not on the car when it came out they do not know what part to get. So am wondering if anyone has done this and if so what the parts I need are either a cross reference or a place to get them.

The second thing I am wondeirng is if anyone has found something that will work to get the anti-freeze that spits out on the ground when the car gets hot. I had been using a 2 leter Pepsi bottle but it tended to nto stay put and I have to pour the anti freeze back in, newer cars have things that the coolant spits into and then gets sucked back out of when the car cools down. Spent a day at a junk yard last summer looking for a container that would fit- bit not a lot of space so my trek was fruitless. Anyone have any luck doing something like this?

If your thermostat is OK, you might want to consider an electric fan with an adjustable controller.

Are you sure your temperature gauge and sending unit are OK? Might be reading too low.

Thermostat was just replaced. Even if the gagues are reading wrong the air coming out of the heater duct is not as warm as it once was so I still need to do something.

Autozone said they can get the Hayden clutch fan and have it Monday morning so ordered it they have a lifeme warranty while not sure about Amazon (plus I do not give out my credit card number online).

DO THIS WITH EVERY NEW PIECE OF GARBAGE THERMOMETER.

1. Did you do the old get your wife's favorite pot, insert her favorite meat thermometer and then throw in the thermostat trick? Make sure everything is cold otherwise the thermostat will know you are trying to cook it and it will run away.

2. Watch the thermostat and the meat thermometer to make sure it is FULLY open at 195 and no sooner.

NEVER trust an auto part when you can test it using all of your wife's utensils.

Also, did you check for the infamous 351C

NO HEAT

You may have a bad heater core. If the heater hoses are hot, but the air in your car is not, either the heater core is plugged or your bypass door is letting in outside air. If you get air blowing into the cabin and your heater fan is off it is the bypass door. Otherwise, have a nice day replacing a heater core...which will leak shortly after it is plugged.

Also, did you check for the infamous 351C bypass plug when you changed your thermostat? Did you confirm you got a 351C thermostat and not a 351W? Please search on this site for outstanding photos and info...but usually bad part/bypass leads to overheating and not underheating.

I did not know there were different thermostats- I used whatever one Autozone sold me. Dont have a wife so cant take her stuff to do that experiment (nor do I think I have a kitehcen thermometer myself- I do have a laser pointer that reads the temperature however).

I did a search for "351C bypass plug" on here and this is the only post that mentions one. So what is this?

I replaced the heater core since it was leaking 2 years ago not fun- replaced the blower motor at that time since they are both a pain to get to. The new fan lasted a year and had to replace it again this spring! Should have left it alone since it was still running.

See that's the problem...... autopukezone... I will never buy parts from them, unless its oil, because at least that is something they can't screw up. I use advance, O'reilly's or a local parts store. They are more knowledgeable and have better parts. Since I got my Stang, I have been getting my parts from mustangs unlimited. They have a great selection, prices and very knowledgeable people

Your right. Thermostat Bypass in the search leaves you high...and dry. I don't mind being high, but don't like being dry.

Take a look at this:

351c_351w_ThermostatBypass.pdf

Because you are running cool, this is probably not your problem. But it bears looking into none the less.

By the way, did the PRI outlaw wives? How do you expect to be happy without a little lady, or a big lady for that matter.

Getting back to the spitting. When I had my brand spanking new 73 Mustang, 351C, the only time the radiator spit was when I filled it to the top. I later learned you are supposed to fill the radiator so it just covers the radiator core, then add a couple of ounces more. However, if you are like most of us and want to have a reserve, follow the previous post.

I beleive the one Autozone sold me was the 351W one, it was a couple weeks ago so not 100% certain.

My radiator seems to go down over time I am guessing from it spitting out.

PRI did not outlaw wives. I had a fiance last year but she decided she liked heroin more than me so dumped me alienated her family and hooked up with a guy who buys her heroin.

If you have the receipt or the package that would help. If they took your phone number for the warranty, they might be able to look it up.

Once it spits out that pint or so, it won't spit any more.

You didn't get to her meat thermometer soon enough.

Seriously, anything beyond a few beers or a few shots is beyond my comprehension.

My brain hurts.

Went to Autozone today to pick up the fan cluthc and it appears as if the fan that is on my car and as far as I know is original will not work.

In order to use the fan clutch there is supposed to be a big hole in the middle of the fan as the fan mounts from behind. My fan has a sold face and need to mount from in front. They would sell a fan that would work (again special order). So have put this project on hold for now while I investigate further.

Does a factory fan have a big hole in the middle? The pics I see in the CJ Pony parts catalogue (of ones for older cars) do not. They have a Flex-A-Lite one that appears that it does.

I did however pick up a generic radiator overflow tank for $8. Made out of plastic but a lot less than the metal ones mentioned here.

Your mustang came with a "flex" style fan with a small hole in the center and a solid hub from the factory.

If you want a clutch fan you would have to replace the fan either special ordering it or getting a used one from a different car/truck etc. Just make sure the blades point the same way as many later cars have reverse rotation waterpumps.

Check out the picture of my original fan on post number 4

The one on my car is not a flex fan and looks nothing like the one in your picture. It has 2 solid blades that are in an x although they are not 90 degrees apart. It is attached to the water pump via a spacer that is about an inch and a half long. The guy at the parts store today told me that it looked like someone bolted a wondow fan onto the car, he was convinced it was not orignal. I know I did not replace it and the oroginal owner did not as far as I could tell do much to change anything on the car.

Photo in the link is original. Not any doubt about it.

My understanding is flex fans were replaced because they flexed themselves into breaking...though 200K+ miles and I never had any problem. So perhaps your owner got spooked and replaced the original with the 4 blade.

I got an OEM in the box on eBay for like $50.

It looks like mine is the original one- from the link above:

D2OE-AA

72 351-2v Mustang

4 Blades

18 1/2 " Diameter

5/8" hole diameter

Ford part no. D2OZ-8600-A

This has no picture but has the same part number as the next one listed:

D2OE-AB

72 250 Torino Std_cool

72 302 351-2v 400 429 Torino(exc/PC)-SC, XC

72 351-4v Torino SC

4 Blades

18 1/2 " Diameter

5/8" hole diameter

Ford part no. D2OZ-8600-A

Here is a link to the pic which gives yet another number:

On my '66. I had a chrome recovery cylinder that bolted to the radiator support using the radiator mount holes. I forget where I got it, but I am sure someone here has seen or heard of these. If I was smarter, I could find it and post a picture, but that ain't happenin':p

Wonders never cease! Check lamustang.com part # ENG-000-497, it is $74.95 which is more than I remember paying.
