Pastel Blue

Researching the factory applied Code "N" Pastel Blue on my current '71 "J" code convertible restoration, It appears that Ford did not offer this colour on the Boss 351 or Mach 1's. To bad, you missed out on a really "tough" colour... ;). This also applied to the Medium Green Metallic ("P"), Medium Brown Metallic ("5") and Light Gold ("8"). I can only surmise that these colours were not deemed "suitable" for the performance image of the Boss or Mach 1 by Ford at the time. This would make a 429 Convertible, Hard Top Coupe or Grande that much more rare based on the paint availability on some of these cars. I know that my vert was 1 of 4 painted in Pastel Blue with the BB engine and the recent 429 Coupe at Mecum Indy would be in the same boat.

If you have a '71 Boss of Mach 1 with one of these colours, I would suspect that it was special order making them very rare as well...

Probably had more to do with coordinating with the lower body and stripe colors than what was "tough". Nothing goes with brown, that's for sure....

I had forgotten! Thanks for the reminder.

Here is a related availability chart from the 71 (only) Facts Book in our WIKI:

*** I am trying to get the 73 Facts book on our WIKI asap. It should be there soon.

Years ago, I looked at a '73 Mach 1 that was code 3B (Light Blue). It had the 73 Mach 1 stripes in black. Hood was not painted black. Also had the factory aluminum mags. It looked really nice, but I was 16, and having none of the light blue. Today, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Sure it does Black is on my 73.
I like the brown. That was the original color of my Grande before the PO painted it. Didn't even open the doors to paint it. :(

I don't see it this way... I think there was some thought/ merit in allocating certain colours to certain cars. Would be nice to know the true at the time Ford rationale though...
