Well..Did not plan on having a BBQ, but you know how that goes.. Made some burnt sacrifice on the old worn out charcoal grill " need a new one" Just burgers and 100% all natural hotdogs, potato salad and all that kinda stuff..And 3 types of BBQ sauce..Made a mild, then a home made honey, and a hot BBQ sauce . Food did not last long thou!!

Glad to see nice weather back for cars shows and grills. :)

I use a Weber charcoal grill, can't beat the flavor just hard to control the flame ups! Tried a gas one didn't like it, went back to charcoal, none of that fantasy self lighting charcoal either. LOL

I got my Weber Performer as a birthday present and love it. You cook with charcoal but it has a small 1lb propane tank that lights the charcoal so no need for starter fluid or self lighting charcoal which in my opinion adds a strange taste to food. Turn the propane on for about five minutes until the charcoal is going good, turn it off and start cooking. The best of both worlds. Best grill I've ever owned...and I'm old, so I've owned plenty of them.

Yes that is proably the most pratical grill for me.and the mix of propane as a starter sounds awesome..Even know i been starring down one of these monsters at my local ranch and home. the weber ranch kettle model..hehe ..It is spendy thou.

I agree webber grilled meat hands done the best. Gas is not as good.
{thumbs up} I think it does make the best BBQ

BTW...Not putting down the anyones propane BBQ's, i like them much better than food cooked inside on the stove..Just my personal preference :)

I prefer charcoal grills for both the taste of the meat and the ritual.

I don't mind gas grills but where's the fun?

If I only need to turn it on and put meat on it, it's mundane. It's like cooking inside, you can do it anytime in no time.

I want to set up the Weber, light the charcoal, watch it burn and wait for it to turn gray. It's more to me than simply having food on the plate at the end.

By the way, I use that chimney (for lack of a better word) by Weber where you don't need chemicals or other stuff to light the charcoal.

You light a piece of wood, put it underneath, and off you go. The draft pulls the flames up through the coal and makes it burn evenly.

When they are ready, you dump them into the grill.

No strange taste at all.

Same here man..And same when i go camping..I rather have it cooked over a fire or a charcoal grill...Just much better..Last few times i went out with my buddy i took my little smokey Joe Weber with me as our only stove...I cooked eggs and sausge and steaks on it all weekend for us...next year we go out with some other freinds...they brung a camp stove and told me to leave my little smokey at home and they would deal with the cooking "fine by me" ..And my buddy ivan told me.." Next time bring your grill..Your food was soo much better " even know they was cooking the same things..even my eggs tasted better on the smokey joe..lol

I need one of them chimney's. One of my freinds is a Weber nut and has one..He allways telling me how better Webers are cause they are round "reason i got the little smokey joe" And he was constantly showing me vids on how the smoke swirls around the meat better in a round BBQ vs a square one...But i do think he is right, they make the best charcoal grill mass produced.

I had the Weber set-up with the small propane tank to get the briquettes going. It worked well, but when we moved to a new house several years ago I gave the Weber to my mother and bought a Propane setup.

I would agree the food does taste a little better with briquettes until I bought a little steel grilling box you put hickory sticks in and set it in the propane grill. It gave the food a nice taste. I like the ability to control the heat better with a gas grill too.

Last year I went one step further. I bought a new propane 7 burner grill last summer and it had a sticker on that said it could be converted to natural gas, but didn't really think about doing the conversion. When I had a new HVAC unit installed for the house last fall I negotiated with the contractor to run a connector from our natural gas line to the grill (he said he was doing it at no extra charge). It's great not to have to worry about the propane tank running out. The building inspector commented that we were the only residential house in town to have a natural gas grill, pretty cool.

I helped my brother-in-law install the natural gas connection to his gas grill a few years ago, and he says he hasn't regretted it once. As you said, Mike, not worrying about propane running out is priceless. I've got to get the hickory stick box. Sounds like a winner.

I sometimes put soaked hickory in my briquettes just for smokey flavor....Sounds like a hell of a set up you got..I would have to have the hickory box if i had a gas grill..lol..I need that smokey flavor when i'm cookin outdoors.

Yes, the hickory thing works on gas grills. But you said, you like the ability to control the heat better and that is just the point. Besides the point that it takes no ceremony to light a gas grille it is just that lack of control that I like on the charcoal grill. I have control in the kitchen but when I light the charcoal grill, I know I will have to fight the elements. :)

I have to get a feel for the heat and where it is higher or lower and spread the meat in a way that goes along with that.

That is part of the fun.

:)

I agree with Mike I enjoy the sense of occasion. There is something primal that is excited by cooking on wood or char fires, the smoke honours our ancestor's and appeases very old gods :p

I'll admit it... I'm a propane guy. Way too convenient. Although, my smoker is electric... Even more convenient.... Looks like a mini fridge, and produces consistent heat and smoke with built in thermostat and probe thermometer.

I'm a propane guy, too, but love the smoke so we roll up the desired sawdust in foil, poke a few small holes in it, and toss it in the grill. Works like a charm. Get that smokey grill flavor without the hassle of briquettes. We've also got a small electric smoker that does a wonderful job on ribs, roasts, and for this weekend, turkey breast. MMMmm, smoked turkey breast. ;)
