My Car
1973 Mustang Mach 1 Q code C6 tranny
I hit a roadblock trying to get the door glass out. My holdup is the 3 bolts holding the window glass to the glass bracket. The nut is round aluminum with a mushroon top so it's difficult to grab and the bolt is steel with no hex head. Looks like they used a special tool to hold the bolt from behind. The two parts are corroded together making them impossible to remove. I tried spraying penetrant but that didn't help and the nut and bolt just spin. Attached a pic and you can see where I was trying to remove it. I was wondering if anyone knows if these bolts and nut can be purchased and if so from where. It appears that I can grind off the aluminum nuts so before I do that I want to source replacement parts.

thx

That's a pop rivet. Push out the center pin and drill the rivet with a 1/4" drill bit. Go slow and you'll be OK.

What year is your car? 1973 they went to rivets to hold in the door glass instead of bolts so they must be drilled out. Those look like rivets to me
It's a 73. I wish I could get a pic of the other side as the head looks like a Y. I think a dremel tool will take off that cap pretty easy. With that window bracket attached to the glass there just not enough of a gap to pull it out. The shop manual just says to remove the 3 nut and washer assembly so it's doesn't appear to be riveted but the process could have changed toward the end of the production run.

RacerX,

The back side just doesn't look like a pop rivet. I don't see why a nut and bolt would not work so I may end up going that route and drilling it out.

Hate to cut in. Was going to post the same starting question tonight. DOOR WINDOW HELP/HINTS NEEDED. Rivets! Wow! Had know clue. Does anyone know of a thread, posting or site for 1973 Coupe door window install? I found front, rear and bits of quarter window install information, but none on door windows. Any help would be helpful. Thanks.

While looking on e-bay I found a window that was removed and was able to get a picture of the back side. They still had the bracket mounted, is there a trick to removing it from the door?

thx

I'm not sure if there is any difference between the Mach 1 and convertible, but I was able to get both of mine out without removing the brackets. I Had to "persuade" the top of the inner door panel and take the rubber sweeps out, but they came out. Seems to me, that I dropped several "F" bombs too. That was five years ago. I'll be damned if I remember how to put them back in......

Thx Doug,

All the innards are removed, The only thing left is the window itself. It just doesn't seem to have enough of a gap to slide the assembly out. Maybe I'll try again next weekend and I'll have better luck.

I was replacing scratched glass, asked this same question a year or so ago. Recieved the same good advise "grind/cut the pop rivets". I did so, removal was easy after grinding the pop-rivet heads. Bolted the rollers back on the new glass, and havent looked back.

BTW I have a pair of factory tint windows, drivers side is only fit to replace busted glass, passengers side is DD quality, cost of shipping to whoever may need it/them.

Tubo,

What would one use to replace the rivet? Do they sell the 71/72 bolts or just head over the the hardware store?
