Door won't open from the outside

The driver's side door of my 73 coupe won't open from the outside. Sometimes it works normally. Sometimes it works if I pull way too hard. Sometimes not at all. I took off the door panel and the rod is connected and seems to be doing what it's supposed to do. Any ideas?

with the door open, try the handle while watching the mechanism. You will have to manually latch it with the door open or nothing moves. May just need lubed.
