After suffering through slow Internet speeds for years on end,

I ordered AT&T U-verse. My current DSL is around 0.5Mb down

due to the fact I live 18,600 feet from the CO. Don't know how

that distance is measured because the CO is actually less than

two miles away. The service I ordered is 15Mb down which won't

happen but is better than 0.5 I guess. ComCast offered 105 down

but I don't game online. Got the 'self install' package to save $100

and there are cable ports on the wall. AT&T signed off on the self

install so I guess we are good to go.

There is a YouTube video about the 'first honest cable company'

but it contains "language" so I can't post it.

If you used poor or damaged cabling, poor or improperly installed connectors, split the signal removing priority from the main network, or it could be the service line entering your house; your signal can be weak, bottle necking speeds. However if you pay for a certain speed, have them test at the main line into your home, if you constantly are the squeaky wheel you may get money back each month. It's there responsibility to get you service if the offer it in their "coverage" zone.

The phone company has been here at least three times. All the

wiring checks fine. One tech spent four hours walking around the

property, I am a renter, looking for a bad wire. I told him my phone's

land line works fine! Earthlink will guarantee 1.5 down, but not at my

distance from the CO. Will keep DSL for email and 'hardwired' money

issues.

Hi Mike -

Just to clarify, if you feel a link may be useful or informative or entertaining related to a post, feel free to post it with a caution about language. Most YouTube videos are pretty tame. :)

Got the new service today. 11.4 down is a far cry from the 0.48 down I was getting.

11.4 was measured using http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/

So I asked the technician why Earthlink could only deliver 0.48 when I am still the

same distance from the CO. He explained Earthlink uses copper wires from the CO

to my place which is 18,600 feet from the CO. AT&T uses optical fiber from the CO

to my street then a couple hundred feet of copper. That made sense. Same monthly fee.

A couple days later...

Could not get the "wireless" printer to work. The HP Deskjet 6840

is only wireless if it is hard wired to a wireless router which it is. LAN

cable connected between printer and U-verse box shows a green

light and the amber light blinks when a print job is sent to the printer.

Still, no print... I can print a test page using a button on the printer

and access the printer's setup function using 192.168.1.67, the

printer's IP. The router's IP 192.168.1.245 allows access to

the router but I could not get the two to talk to each other. I had to

reconfigure the printer's IP as a static DHCP by entering a string of

numbers in the proper places. I think the printer became

192.168.1.200 and they now talk. This is somewhat similar when

trying to get a quench Cleveland's distributor to talk to the carb,

albeit much easier.
