For those who sometimes have trouble getting their hood latch to engage I was able to resolve my issue today. Apparently after 40 years of the latch being sprung and hitting a metal tab meant to keep it in alignment, the tab gradually bent to such a point that it was not allowing the latch to go further enough forward to probably be sprung by the hood shaft portion of the latch. Now it latches down perfectly with no more slamming. I finally got to the point I took the latch off to inspect it and this is what I found:
