After looking at pics there are some cars with the chrome bumper and others with the urethane body color one. My 71 Mach1 came with the body colored bumper. For a replacement bumper can I only get the chrome one? Do they even sell a replacement urethane that would then need to be painted to match the car? If I prefer the body colored one, can I take the chrome one, then have it stripped and painted to match the car? I like the look of the body colored bumper and it doesnt really matter to me if its solid metal or urethane.

Thanks!

The urethane bumper is not reproduced so your only option is a used one. The chrome bumpers can be painted, you just need to have it properly prepped. Ryan

I painted my chrome bumper. Looks pretty good.

The main difference is that it's missing the indentation in the middle which really sets the urethane one apart.

Plus chrome bumpers never really fit on the fender end but that's the way it is.

You'll need to have the chrome blasted off and then build the paint from there. Forget about painting on the chrome.

I did this as a test and oriented on the chrome and painted it but the chrome will prevent the primer from sticking to it. I knew that was gonna happen but I wanted to see how it looks first and I have to do it again and have it all sand blasted.

Mike, since you painted your bumper, or you are painting it again, it would be the ideal time to cut and tuck the bumper to fit the fenders better. If you don't have the fab skills you could possibly find someone to do it for you. Once you strip the chrome off it would be easy to cut and tuck the bumper in and weld it back together. Body fill the weld area then spray it. I have thought of doing mine the same way.... my rubber bumper is getting pretty rough. I bet with a little work I could recreate the indent that the rubber bumper has on a metal bumper. Might be fun to try......

Yeah, I've been thinking along that path too. Those bumpers are simply too wide. This is the original one and i have a repro one that's even wider. It would need to be shortened but I lack the skills and the hourly rate of any decent shop here is way too high to justify such a job.

Maybe I could cut up the repro one and learn how to weld by attempting to do this myself. If I screw up it goes to scrap metal.

Sounds like a plan for the future. :)
