Gas filler gasket

Since my restoration completion back in 2014 I have always smelled an odor of gas at the back of the car. I am replacing the gasket mounted on the tank where the filler tube goes into the tank. One side of the gasket has a flange to it and the other does not. I have searched without any luck and all of my materials only show the mounting of the filler tube to the body. Anyone know the proper installation direction?

flange up. you cannot get it inside the tank anyway. there is a little lip that goes into the tank. then the fun starts. the seal is SUPER tight to get the filler neck in.

I was lucky i installed a new tank and sender, new fuel lines and sender so i was able to use a Heat gun to soften the rubber and get my neck in, no amount of grease was helping me install it. i needed 3000watts of heat additional. Remember to put the trunk floor seal on the filler neck before you attempt install into the fuel tank, dry fit everything to make sure it is correct before committing.

I replaced both of mine too, the tank seal and the trunk floor seal. I had gas pouring out when I filled the tank because the tank seal was so old and detioriated. I was lucky though, I just used either a little grease, or vasiline and everything slid together pretty easily.

Like the previous posted said, slide the trunk seal on the neck first though.

Sometimes, the smell of gas at the rear can be as a result of other faulty components of the entire fuel system on these cars. Hopefully, this change will correct your issue.

Thank you everyone.  Well the impatient part of me kicked in after I pulled the old gasket out and I put the new one in (the wrong way).  I noticed in my shop manuals that ford indicated to use 10w30 "only" on the filler pipe when sliding it back in.  I had some 5w20 so I was worried it wouldn't work correctly, but it slid back in without to much difficulty.  As I was sitting down after completing the project I got to wondering if the gasket was in the right orientation.  So I created this post.  Well, consensus was I was wrong so I pulled it apart last night and re-installed the gasket with the flange out.  This also gave me a chance to work on some of the holes for the coarse thread bolts.  They didn't want to snug down as much as I would like so with the redo I was able to get a better bite with the bolts.  So the rule once is good twice is better still holds true.  Will see if the odor goes away.  All new components so I do hope so.
