I agree check the fast idle screw on the side of the Carb. Always rule out the easy stuff before you start replacing parts

 
Before you change any of your carb settings/parts go ahead and get an rpm meter and verify the speed. This will prove to be invaluable if you find it is too high and need to lower it.

 
I agree with will to verify that rpsm's. Has this always been a problem or did it just recently start doing it?

 
It looks like it could be and it on the highest step in the picture. Is that a Weber carburetor? If so please post a picture of the carb. Thanks, Chuck
I'd say it's an early Edlebrock carb as they were done by Webber. I remember a mate bought a car with one of those carbs on it years ago and he thought it was a Webber and got all excited. Had to let him down when I showed him the Edlebrock label on the front of it.
