My Car
'71 Mustang Mach 1 "M" Code. 351C and 4 speed toploader.
OK, so went out to the unit to spend some time with Sheila. I got to put in the new air cleaner with the spacer I just bought. Yay! fits great. Looks sharp. Then I installed the dash speaker i got a while ago. Fits, works, need to work on how it is mounted though.

ok now to the issue at hand. I had previously taken the top of the carb off in order to look at the jets/rods combinations. I didn't change anything, however. I put it all back together, checked my connections, everything was as it should be as far as I could tell. I had adjusted the choke housing setting to 3 steps lean, but this would be the first time it was running with that setting. Also, while I was 'playing' with the carb, i had removed the idle air screw and checked to make sure it wasn't dirty/grimy. I did not get a chance to set the screw today, but when I put it back in, i put it all the way in and backed it out 2 full turns. pretty close to where i had adjusted them both previously. Now today, it is about 18 degrees outside so my hands are freezing, but i wanted to start the car anyway. i had to adjust the choke housing a little bit to get it to close enough to start, and during my 'troubleshooting' process i had cranked the car for maybe2 seconds total. I don't like to sit and crank on it for very long. I had not pumped the pedal too much during this. When I went back to check the choke i did not smell gas so I was fairly sure it had not flooded. after i adjusted the choke a little i pumped the accelerator lever and i did not hear the 'squirt' from the pump in the carb. I pumped it a couple more times and began to hear the squirt. at this point i was pretty sure the fuel bowl was just empty from me taking the thing apart and had taken a second to get enough suction to fill back up and get into the carb. Went back in turned the key and it fired right up, no pedal. Cool! i was in the process of recording some video for you guys to help with other questions and had the air cleaner off and on, the car sounded pretty good, it was warming up. Maybe 5 minutes in the choke is about 2/3 open and i gave the car some gas. sounded good, but when it came back down the car kind of bogged a little, but caught itself and didn't miss another beat. i 'double pumped' the accelerator, two shots in short order, and the dang thing backfired at me! It didn't quite sound like what i know of as a backfire. I don't want to give bad info, or set anyone on a paranoid path, but it sounded like a firecracker. Not the typical POP of gas. Maybe I am wrong, or this is a backfire from something I am not familiar with. did I pump gas into something while starting the car and it finally cleared its throat? maybe when I pumped the car that second time it opened the secondaries for a moment and 'loose' fuel got into the circuit and popped? Please give me some advice. i want to think it was not a big deal and the car was just acting up at me.

where can i post video? can i post video?

Sounds like during your cold start up attempts you got some extra fuel in your exhaust that finally ignited. As far as what caused it, there is a long list of items. It happened to me when I had a coil going bad making it hard to start. In any case I don't think you caused any damages, I had the same fire cracker sound, no damages done.

Man, I hope you are right. This car has been a winner mechanically since I got it. had some issues with the water pump getting coolant into the oil, but I am pretty sure we caught that in time and got it fixed. Other than that the engine has always been spectacular. It took me about 10 seconds to get the car shut down after it went off, and it didn't sound like anything was banging around or making any more noise than usual. I really think I might have just pumped some extra fuel in somewhere and it was spitting it back out at me.

Couldn't directly upload video so here goes with my first youtube upload.

Not sure if the video is up yet or not.

She sounding good!! Love them red stangs..lol

Ya...I agree with Jim...On cold start up they can do some weird stuff once and a great while...I would worry too much unless it keeps doing it.

Did the video work? It's telling me it's not done yet. Thanks, this is why I ran home right away to tell you guys so that i could get some peace of mind.

And how cool is it that the lady at the DMV gave me a license plate that ended in 71?

I had a backfire when my fusible link blew and the coil was getting no voltage, ( was able to short across the solenoid to start it, but very, very rough running. Blew a muffler apart at the seams, but no other damage.

Yours should be fine

In the video that is exhaust, not smoke, it's just very cold out. I was trying to get a picture of the water that comes out when i start it up. Pretty sure this is all normal, just wanted your guys thoughts.

I just listened and didn't even watch the vidoe. Your Good! No problems there that I can hear.
That video was taken just moments before i fiddled with the throttle and got the 'backfire' it was just started and still warming up. I am running a 4 speed and currently idling around 800, that seem too high? I know I have some fiddling still to get my air screws dialed in and the timing set right. I haven't played much with my timing, I have a vacuum gauge I used to great effect on my old truck. I have been told vacuum may not be the best way to set timing on these cars though. thoughts?

I've ONLY used a vacuum gauge and timing light to ste up my cars. Of course I know the rest of the build as well but you can't go wrong on initial set up with one.
