OK, so went out to the unit to spend some time with Sheila. I got to put in the new air cleaner with the spacer I just bought. Yay! fits great. Looks sharp. Then I installed the dash speaker i got a while ago. Fits, works, need to work on how it is mounted though.
ok now to the issue at hand. I had previously taken the top of the carb off in order to look at the jets/rods combinations. I didn't change anything, however. I put it all back together, checked my connections, everything was as it should be as far as I could tell. I had adjusted the choke housing setting to 3 steps lean, but this would be the first time it was running with that setting. Also, while I was 'playing' with the carb, i had removed the idle air screw and checked to make sure it wasn't dirty/grimy. I did not get a chance to set the screw today, but when I put it back in, i put it all the way in and backed it out 2 full turns. pretty close to where i had adjusted them both previously. Now today, it is about 18 degrees outside so my hands are freezing, but i wanted to start the car anyway. i had to adjust the choke housing a little bit to get it to close enough to start, and during my 'troubleshooting' process i had cranked the car for maybe2 seconds total. I don't like to sit and crank on it for very long. I had not pumped the pedal too much during this. When I went back to check the choke i did not smell gas so I was fairly sure it had not flooded. after i adjusted the choke a little i pumped the accelerator lever and i did not hear the 'squirt' from the pump in the carb. I pumped it a couple more times and began to hear the squirt. at this point i was pretty sure the fuel bowl was just empty from me taking the thing apart and had taken a second to get enough suction to fill back up and get into the carb. Went back in turned the key and it fired right up, no pedal. Cool! i was in the process of recording some video for you guys to help with other questions and had the air cleaner off and on, the car sounded pretty good, it was warming up. Maybe 5 minutes in the choke is about 2/3 open and i gave the car some gas. sounded good, but when it came back down the car kind of bogged a little, but caught itself and didn't miss another beat. i 'double pumped' the accelerator, two shots in short order, and the dang thing backfired at me! It didn't quite sound like what i know of as a backfire. I don't want to give bad info, or set anyone on a paranoid path, but it sounded like a firecracker. Not the typical POP of gas. Maybe I am wrong, or this is a backfire from something I am not familiar with. did I pump gas into something while starting the car and it finally cleared its throat? maybe when I pumped the car that second time it opened the secondaries for a moment and 'loose' fuel got into the circuit and popped? Please give me some advice. i want to think it was not a big deal and the car was just acting up at me.
where can i post video? can i post video?
