My Car
1971 250ci Coupe
Hi, firstly I would like to say how good it was to find this site/forum! I am from the UK (Scotland) and until October 2010 had only ever admired American cars but never thought of owning one. I work as a sales manager in a new car dealership and have only really ever owned European cars or motor bikes.

This changed when a customer asked if I knew anyone that would be interested in taking a friends old Mustang off his hands which had been in a garage for the past 16 years.... At the time I said I would ask about but that I was not sure.

I enquired about the age and model getting excited thinking I might have a chance to get a bargain classic Mustang with a big V8 and I suddenly became very interested to take the car myself. Turns out the car is a 1971 Coupe I6 250ci with a 3 speed manual, drum brakes all round and a non-runner. Looking into the cars I found lots of info but could not see too many parts/spares listed! Everything was 64 1/2 - 70 and very little information about 71-73's.

However the cogs had started turning and I went to see the car and in November 2010 became the owner of the car shown in the pics (the pics are of the day I had the car delivered to my bosses yard hence the scrap in the background) I have since had the car stored for the past 14 months and is moving to a new home (workshop) in 2 weeks so thought it time I tell the community about my car as I plan on something very different to the usual restoration and hope it is not too off the wall to be appreciated by everyone here.

It was only last week that after a year of Googling 1971 Mustangs that I finally found this place, the perfect site!

I will update and let you know the plans for the car once I get it to my workshop and stripped back to see the size of the project ahead of me.

Great to see so many 71-73's on here, I am converted and love them!

Stuart

Welcome from Australia!

::welcome::

There are lots and lots of parts for 71-73 models now (refer site sponsors), and the internet makes it really easy for us non-US residents to get parts shipped overseas.

Welcome from Alabama! (again)

Looks like you have a good car to start with. I'm glad you found us & am looking forward to seeing your progress. Be sure to post your area of the world on our member map under the fun stuff link above.

Welcome to the site from Virginia. The I6 is a strong, reliable, and good running engine from my experience, but it's tempting to do the V8 conversion. Keep us updated on your plans.

Thank you for the welcome. I have toyed with the idea of a V8 and have always wanted one after hearing the Vettes at Le Mans every year, rolling thunder and breathtaking!

However I like the idea of the 6 and have already purchased an engine. Having seen an Ozzy with a Ford Falcon straight six in a '66 I am making a British Mustang with an inline 6 Jaguar engine from a 1996 XJ6, 4.0 AJ16 engine (250 bhp standard) with auto but have bought a T5 world class box to convert to manual as my '71 is a manual. More news to follow on the other modifications I will be making.

::welcome:: from Mustang, Oklahoma. You've come to the right place. Chuck

WELCOME aboard, Stuart!

I can assure you that you have found the "right" place to gain additional information and support on your journey with your Coupe. We value the fact that Restorers, Modifiers and everybody in between can come here and not be concerned about having their "project" maligned. We LOVE all approaches to the hobby.

I really look forward to reading more relative to your intended approach and interacting with you on the individual Forums.

Again, Welcome!

BT

::welcome:: from NY , take it from another newbie that this is the place to be for all your 71-73 questions and answers

Hi Stuart, and ::welcome:: from Luxembourg/Europe.

Sounds like an interesting project with the Jaguar engine.

I have owned two Jags (6 cyl. Series 3 XJ6 and V-12 XJS) and I found out that those cars are great for people who like to walk or ride the bus..... :D

Thank you and thank you Luxstang :) I am aware of the Jag frailties but will be re-wiring the full car and the only jag parts will be mechanical (hopefully!) as the I6 engines seem bulletproof and very smooth. I like the Jag engine as it is an update on the original idea (with tenuous Ford links) and I got the engine very cheap :p

Welcome Stuart,

This should be an interesting build. Let us know how it all developes.

Will it purr, gallop or buck?
Thanks! Looking forward to the strip down and build has been over 10 years since my last car project which was shared with my brother, a rusty Alfa Romeo Alfasud which is now back to the rust (the car not my bro!)

Initially it will purr with the smooth Jag engine but will be making it gallop and buck further down the line!

Stuart
