Let's try it one more time. Then, I promise to give it a break. ****Happy 430 day!****
The MEL series engines. Although none of these engines were ever production installed in any Mustang, they are a milestone engine for Ford. These engines were engineered for the MEL (Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln) vehicle lines. They displaced 383, 410, 430, and 462 and were used from '58 through mid-'68. Some of these engines were used exclusively in certain vehicle lines. The 383 in the Mercury line, the 410 in Edsel models, the 430 in Mercury and Lincoln, and the 462 exclusively in Lincolns. The only Ford that used these engines was the 430 engine in the '59-60 T-Birds. This allowed Ford to use the '59-60 T-Birds in NASCAR with this powerful engine. The 430 engine was replaced by the 462 in '65. The 462 remained in use until it was replaced by the new 385 series 460 in mid-'68.
The milestone engine I spoke of is the '58 Super Marauder 430. It was rated at 400 hp, a new high horsepower mark for cars built in the US in the '50s. It used three two-barrel carburetors and had an air cleaner housing, which some consider a work of automotive art—or at least to the car guys.
Now, you know more than you ever thought you needed to know about these MEL engines!
