when I got my parts back from the machine shop the box of valve springs, keepers and rockers parts also had shim spaces, I guess from under the springs. My new cam kit has springs but no shims. What were the shims for?

Shimming allows the you to get proper seat pressure and spring hight with new springs when assembling heads. It also helps protect aluminum heads from the spring "digging" into the head.

Shims- Allow you to get uniform installed heights, and to get the right installed heights for your camshaft.
