Yep, that would be the Gas-Adjust. GR2s were silver, Excel-G are black.
The Gas-Adjust are pretty hard. I can see how they would cause stress fractures.
Although....did they have rubber or polyurethane shock bushings? If poly, that would definitely compound the issue.
While I like KYB, they are not the most sophisticated shock/strut. Not on par with Koni or Bilstein, but better than Monroe or Gabriel station wagon shocks.
I've used the GR2s on my Opels and the KYB AGX adjustables on my RX7 with no complaints or issues.
