I was cruising through Craigslist and ran across these Steering Column Bracket.

Do they look familiar? They are for the 1968 Camaro and 68 to 74 Nova Steering Column Brackets. I also found out through research that the the flexible Instrument Cluster Circuit Board With Tachometer 1971-1973 was a GM design by Bunkie Knudsen. We can see a lot influence on the 1971 - 1973 Mustangs.

GM went to the flexible circuit board design circa 1968, and Ford started in 1969. My thought is that it was pushed by a vendor who sold the car manufacturers on this new product because (1) is was more reliable ---which is wasn't) and (2) it was lighter in weight, and (3) cheaper.

Agreed. I have a new one on order to replace my old.

I have a fellow car guy who's car burnt to the gound b/c of those replacment circuit boards. That's why I bought a hard wired dash from midlife. Not much more and safer!

As far as burning down. Our cars and really any classic car should have a quick disconnect at the battery and you should open anytime you are away from the car. You should always have a fire extinguisher in the car also. I watched a new 1969 Dodge Charger burn to the ground when brand new because they could not get the battery unhooked, no tools. Electrical short in dash and it burnt in the parking lot at Bristol Dragway.

There is no perfect design. Hey we lost several astronauts to failures in some of the highest engineered equipment in history.

Fuses should save your car but might get started burning when the short takes place.

Vendors do go from door to door and sell their ideas. Usually highest volume gets first supply then all get it.

True True. That said for a few dollars more than the ribbon midlife makes a nice harness!!
