Hello,

Have a 73 with the original 2 speed windshield wiper motor. On the very few occasions that I have had to use the windshield wipers I have had the following problem. Wipers will run for a minute or so then stop in midstroke. If I turn off and then back on they run fine. They may run for quite some time before this happens. Fair to say I need to replace the WW motor or could it be the switch ? Switch seems tight and in good shape. Open to any suggestions ... thanks

The stopping in mid-stroke would point to the motor

The on / off with the switch, then they work is a curve ball

I would check the grounds first

On the motor there are 3 bolts to the body with rubber grommets. One has a ground strap on it.

To determine if it's motor or switch I would connect the motor directly to the battery and see if the problem is duplicated.
Thanks for all the info. Let you know what I find.

Does the issue occur at both speed settings? if not then your switch is suspect.

The white or the Dark Blue-Orange wire is where you want to apply power to. One is for slow and the other fast speed. If the issue occurs when trying this then the motor is suspect. Make sure that the grounding strap is attached to one of the mounting bolts and the motor as Don mentioned.

The cancel switch is inside the wiper motor case.

Hello,

Did some testing today .... took the wiper motor out and powered it directly from the battery. It ran fine in both low and high and never stopped. It did make a rythmic clicking once every revolution and the motor was a little noisy. I put a little load on it by wearing a glove and putting friction on the rotating spindle, but it never stopped. I believe this is the original motor.

The ground strap was painted over but otherwise looked in good shape. I lifted it up by removing the rubber washer and nut and wire brushed the entire area to clean metal. The nut that the mounting bolt screws into in the firewall was also painted over so I cleaned that up.

I am embarassed to say that when I bench tested it i grounded it via a bolt that holds the case together at the base and not the actual ground strap which I will do when I am back with the car.

So at this point do I assume that it is the switch or ground and reinstall the motor and see what happens ? Or since I have the motor out and it is original and making noise just go ahead and replace it ? Open to any suggestions ... thanks.

I took my motor apart and the gear box also and washed all the 40+ year old grease out and put new in. I works much quieter and smoother. It is a little tricky getting the brushes back in also cleaned the armature. If the armature is dragging somewhere the bearings are shot and will make it stop.

David, what did you use to clean and then to re-lube? I've got one off a parts car I want to "save" and put up. Most of the rebuilt I've seen have the pigtails cut off which I don't care for.

Hello I was able to take the Windshield wiper motor out take it apart cleaned it up relubedit. it looked fine put it all back together. Now when I turn the wipers on they work fine but when I turn them off they stop in the up position. I thought maybe I connected the articulating arms 180° out. So I double checked that reset the wiper arms to The bottom position checked everything over. They still stop in the upright position. I'm guessing I did something stupid and reversed position of the electric motor inside the housing. Can anyone give me some advice on this? Thanks very much.

Did you remove the output arm from the out put shaft? If so, did you index the position of the arm and shaft? If not this drawing may help. Chuck

i didn't and I know better ... if I put the case back on the wiper motor turned 180 degrees would that cause this issue ? The large magnets are on the inside of either side of the case. Thanks

Also my motor does not look like the one in your book. Mine just has a threaded output shaft with flattened sides. Thanks

Today I went to the car and tried turning the motor housing 180 degrees to reverse the sides the magnets were on ... made no difference. I then disconnected the arm from the motor spindle and bumped the motor with a jumper to turn the spindle 180 degrees. I re-attached the arm to the spindle and now the wipers work properly and park in the down position. One minor issue ... the wipers don't park low enough. They need to go down app. 3-4 inches to be parked in the wiper supports.

I tried disconnecting the arm again and bumping the motor to move the spindle slightly in the hope that would lower the blade position .... no success. I also tried taking the wiper arm off of the spindle to adjust between the winter and summer positions .... made no difference. any sugggestions ? Thanks
