And now back to our regularly schedules cooling issue. I checked the hoses.  Bottom one does have its spring in it.  Top one is in good shape.  Took it out again today.  Let it warm up for about 3 minutes. No movement on the gauge.  Backed it out of the garage and sat for 2 minutes in reverse...

I agree it's not the restrictor.  Thanks for the ideas.  I'm going to put the original thermostat back in since I've tested it and it opens at 195.  Looks like a water pump is next, fairly cheap.  Might as well flush the radiator while its drained.

Yes the restrictor is seated.  The engine and cooling system have work flawlessly for years. Never had an overheating issue.  This just started Saturday.

Oil is still nice and clean.  There is some barely noticeable  flow with the cap off.  I can let it run at idle all day long it the gauge is fine.  I'm thinking the radiator is shot.  The fan at idle is enough to compensate for the bad radiator but at speed the normal air flow isn't enough.

351c.   Standard 195 deg t-stat. (Stant 13469)  I tested the old one and it was working. Other info.    Radiator is 24 years old with 24000 miles on it.  Car is stored 6 months a year.  Water pump is 15 years old.

On a side note. Hagertys valuation guide on their website is poor. The only engine options for a 71 Mach 1 are a 302 or 429. No prices for any 351 car. I've emailed them but still no change.

I'm building a 53 f100. It came with a 1970 truck rear. I found that it had 28 spline axles. The tag on the 9" decoded to a 3.50 open with a 8.75 ring gear, not a 9". Is the tag still on the center section?

Spoilers were never offered on convertibles so there are no factory measurements. It's up to you where you drill.

I had the same problem with mine 20 years ago. I was able to take it apart and clean, fix or adjust it. I can't remember exactly what was wrong but it's been working ever since. I think the case was riveted so it had to be drilled out and screwed back together.
