Found this article very interesting. Starts on page 69 with pic of (pre-production) Maverick parked on top of Dearborn Proving Ground's grade test hill.
It really explains the feelings of the industry back then. It is amazing that our cars sold as many as they did with all the external pressures to economize. Then with all the emissions and safety constraints... Oh yeah - don't forget the manufacturers' budgets! We could all be trying to restore Datsun 210's!!! :shootself:
