From what I have read the FMX primarily came on the 351 2v.

yup FMX came on the low end cars 351-2V being one... my 72 is originally a FMX, changed to a C6.

There were 14,246 1971 Fastbacks (to include Mach 1s) built with the FMX transmission and the 351 2V (H-Code) engine.

Lots of things are different. Weight, gear ratios, strength, aftermarket support, etc. The FMX is not a bad transmission but there isn't a lot of aftermarket support for them. The C4 is the grandfather transmission to many of the Ford's transmissions that followed.
