1973 mach1 rotissoire restoration.
new to this site so glad I found it. I have two sets of these rims,why is the center hub opening two different sizes.are these hub centric rims or lug centric rims.front end starts to shake at 50mph+. I put hub centric rings in the front but still is happening.i put on new tires,and balanced,new bushings,front end aliginment,new rotors,balanced drive shaft,rebuilt motor mounts cause there only made for this year,i still feel vibrations in the seat.at my wits end.any help would be greatly appreciated.thanks john.

You are sure that it happens only at a certain tire rotation/speed regardless of engine RPMs? If you have a tach make note of the RPMS and then drive the car steady in second gear at the same RPMs and see if you still have the shake.

There are other threads on the forum that mentioned that the 73 OEM aluminum slot wheels were used on Maverick and Mercury vehicles. Maverick rims have the same size center hole as Mustangs, but the Mercury models have a larger diameter center hole than the Mustang rims. Sound like you might have a few Mercury rims in the mix.

Could be a bent wheel or a bent axle/hub. Measure the run-out and circularity of each wheel and tire, with the wheels mounted and the car on a lift or jack stands.

 
The statements made about the center hole is correct. Mustang and Maverick are same and should fit the hub on front wheel and stub on rear axle. Riding only on the lugs is a much weaker set up. Sure you can to 110 but still not as good as fitting the hub.

You can make a bushing to go inside the wheels. I actually have three different diameter center holes in wheels I have like 4 sets.

BTW I have perfect set of maverick and mercury caps that are not repoed that I know of.

Do the process of elimination to find your shake like is suggested. You can inflate a tire too much and break belts inside the core and will cause horrible vibrations.

that sounds like a really good idea.I told my mechanics about it and they agree to try it. someone else mention about a bent axle we are going to look into that to.thanks I'll let you know.

 
here's an update on the vibration. they found one of the u-joints was tight when one way and free the other way,and  found a weight missing off one of the rear drums,about 5 oz. tried 2nd gear with high rpm's didn't have vibration. what ever is causing vibration is coming from something turning at high speed.something not balanced.thanks.let you know next update.

 
here's the update on the vibration.SUCCESS! both rear drums were missing the weights,put on two new rear drums and the vibration is gone.had nothing to do with the rims or the front end.will post pics soon.thanks for all the input.

That's good news! I have never heard of the drums being out of balance before. Learn something new every day.

who would of thought ? there must be a reason why there are weights on the rear drums.every body was saying it's coming from the front end.I got some really great mechanics now who figured it out.send pics soon.thanks again.john.
