My Car
1971 Mach1 429/460
680 lift cam
I recently acquired an unused original 1971 Mach 1 flip Gas door, i was told it was a Factory original, not a replacement part, ( i need to look that up).

Would you use it? or sell it? I can load pictures, but my car isn't exactly mint.

its nice, but i'm not sure its "original unused gas cap nice"

what do you think??

First of all, WELCOME aboard.

When you get some time, please go into the "Introduction" Forum and post up with a bit about yourself and your 1971 Mustang so that we might give you a proper introduction.

As to the flip open gas cap, they are being reproduced with better safety parameters in some cases (as I understand it). That having been said, it might be of some real value (If it is original) to some of the "Purists" here on the Site or elsewhere.

I currently have an "original" flip open cap on my '73 Mach 1 (428CJ/Toploader) and an aftermarket one on my '73 Grande (472/C6) and quite honestly I cannot tell the difference.

So I'm just trying to decide what to do, as you said, there are some purists..

I would use it and be proud of my gas cap but you might consider putting it on ebay and see how much it brings, might surprise you if more than one person, just has to have it.

That was my thought, and with the return proceeds, buy a fake (Scott drake)

Your car is a 71, If you like the cap, a put it on the car and smile. While it may be NOS it is a service part not used on a production 71 Mach. See the photo, "MOTORCRAFT" D2Z part number. Just an opinion, Chuck

OK... I just gotta know: what kind and what size(s) are your rims and tires? I'll be painting mine Light Pewter as well, and those wheels look absolutely SICK on your car (and this is from someone who's not exactly a huge fan of 17's).

I haven't had one in a long time but

Before the repro ones came out ] I say repro ones as there are now 3 manufacturers ]

The NOS service caps WERE about 225.00 - 250.00 -

Repro is 100.00

I'm with Chuck I would use it.

Oh yeah - I would use the '71 flipper cap as well. In fact, that's the nicest thing currently on my car, aesthetic-wise. I didn't want my newly installed fuel tank to have any weird stuff wind up in it while at the shop, so I snagged a repop from OMS and it fits perfectly. If I had an original that was still all there (mine was missing the flipper cap part, as you can see in my sig-pic below), I would definitely be using it instead.

I'd actually thought about swapping the repop flipper cap onto my original base/bezel, but the repop unit was actually just too nice to break up for 'parts.'

They are actually American Racing 200s I believe, unpainted Aluminum, tires are a 235/45/17 (they should be wider) with what we started with, 17s were the way to go

I was researching the numbers before I bought it, not a lot of info, but that was my thought as well when I saw the D2
