My Car
1971 Mustang Mach 1, M code, 4 speed.
A question came up on another FB Mustang page ( I know some of you will have seen it) about a '71 gas cap, bought as a replacement part, that appears to have paint on it and the poster claims it was as received right out of the box at the dealership. I actually question that as I KNOW the one I put on my car, which I know came off a 71 Mustang, is diecast and chrome plated. I also had 2 early 72's and the both had chrome plated flip open caps.
I'm wondering if service replacement caps might have been painted, as the poster claims, after the original stock was used up. This hardly makes sense to me, but this persons says that what looks like paint is flaking off.
Any ideas Chuck?

The outer ring on my 71 is painted argent. It's an original as it's stamped Autolite. I really have to detail this car.

FWIW, I'd take Steph's word, she's been around 71-72s a long time.

The Argent on the outer ring is correct for original.

The one I have definitely does NOT have paint on it on the outer ring. The pics do not shows this the best as the chrome is slightly pitted.

Ah, you've seen it then!
