I was looking at the A/C system.  I saw these quick connections on the A/C port and was wondering if that indicates that this has been converted to 134a or if they are for R12.

It also doesnt cool very good like its low on freon. I know they charged it recently so that means theres a leak somewhere. Are there any common places these systems leak?

Doesn't look like they converted properly. They added the low side 134a adapter and didn't do the high side. I'm sure it will leak if the o- rings were not changed , I bet they didnt

 
That is kind of what I had figured. Seeing the other jobs they did to the car im not surprised at anything. I dont understand why people dont take the time to do things correctly. I understand not having the money, but if you dont have the money then you dont do the repair/upgrade till you have enough to do it right. Half ass is no way to do anything. If you are too stupid to work on your car you should leave it up to the pro's. Personally I have been working on cars for only about 5 years and I know more than some of the mechanics I have talked to, which is scary. Since I dont know alot about AC I will have to take it in to my trusted mechanic and have them check it out.

 
Save your money!

This is a DIY project

Buy a o- ring kit and high pressure port

Take all apart, install the rings, add 4 oz oil, replace 32oz 134a

 
What I am thinking is, that the A/C had not worked in years, and right before the last person sold it, they just threw a 134a fitting on it, and added 134a to it. Never mind flushing out the mineral oil or anything like that. Thats my biggest misgiving about it. I dont mind DIYing it, I replaced the entire ac system in my bronco. I just hate not knowing whats going on with it. So I may just have the mechanic flush the entire system, replace all the o rings and put new service ports on it for 134a and go with it. At least I would know all the mineral oil is out of it. Then they can check for leaks. Eventually I would like to get the new 134a evaporator and condenser for it, at least that would increase its efficiency a bit.

 
There is a ton of labor changing the evap! Leave it be

Change the o-rings rings, flush out system, fresh dryer($20) and oil, charge it up..DONE

 
THats the plan for the moment. I just want it to work. I will do a full restoration of it at a later date when I have time. RIght now I just want to get it working so I can put some miles on it.

 
Best AC in the world are all windows open and your arm trailing out the open window feeling that hot sun on your skin. Cant beat it :D
I have to disagree there. Try doing nearly 1000 miles in 95+ temps everyday with high humidity over 4 days. I wish I had AC after that.

 
I did my 73 last year and have not charged yet to see if it leaks or not. I found lots of corrosion inside the metal ends on the hose metal connections. I did wire brush and also where the O-rings seat I used fine steel wool to clean and smooth them off. I did check the condenser and evaporator in a water tank with air pressure also. I flushed everything out with water and dried it for days. I baked the dryer in over for several hours do not know if that did anything or not.

My plan is to use a new refrigerant that comes from Canada and the name just escaped my last living brain cell. It takes way less of this new stuff but is not approved in the U.S. but you can order it and install yourself. I will have to go to garage tomorrow to get the brand. From what I read about it is much more efficient that R-12, which I can still get easily here, or the 134 a. I got the gauges and vacuum pump at Harbor Freight for less than shop would do the vacuum for. I have already used the gauges on my truck to charge it so paid for themselves.

I used mineral oil to lube the O-rings when replacing them like I was told to do. One thing I thought was needed was a filter to catch the crap but there was not one. Does anyone know of one that can be added? I know my 84 mustang had a filter when I change the o-rings in it I changed the filter. I figure the seals on the compressor will be bad this car has sat for 25 years.

I will update tomorrow when I get the name of the new refrigerant.

I think it is called Duracool but will check.

The dryer is the system filter, throw your in the garbage and go spend $20 On a new one

 
I had already gone to look and found some for $17.00 including shipping and of course made in China. I will change for sure. Thanks
