need help i have a 71 boss 351 the crank is a 351 cj the boss crank was shot wore out i have the correct flywheel i dont have the correct damper i cant see 1200 dollars for a used one can i use the 351 cj damper with the cj crank or must i use a boss damper what are my options can anyone please help with this matter thank you

i have a cj balancer this one on amazon isnt a boss damper just a replacement to 351 but still didnt address my question thank you
You can use your CJ balancer. You don't need a Boss 351 balancer, necessarily. The standard 351C, 351C CJ, and 351C Boss all used 28-ounce imbalance.

ok thats what i was concerned with if you reed the 351c and boss bookt it says the boss flywheel isnt intercangeable so to or compared to what i was thinking because the boss damper is bigger it had to match but with the boss damper being bigger than cleveland wouldnt it weigh more

A spinning part can weigh more but if its balanced the same all its doing is adding inertia. I think any 351C balancer will work as long as its the 28 oz. imbalance variety.

If I remember correctly the difference between the Boss and non-Boss flywheels is the Boss used a larger clutch so the flywheel and beelhousing were larger. But I may be mis-remembering that.

thanj you so much i believe your correct want threw me off it said interchangeable but thats cause of the 11 in vs 10.5 in clutch

@Sheriff41 and @mjlan are correct. No concern using a cj vs Boss damper under normal street or light strip use IF they both retain their original factory balance (sometimes the dampers are rebalanced for a custom build). I've swapped the below factory Ford Boss (left) and CJ (right) balancers on the same engine for various
setups without issue.

Sometimes, Ford will use a higher nodularity iron for performance parts, such as crankshafts, rods, flywheels, third members, etc. I don't know if Ford's Boss flywheels were of a higher nodularity, or not, but it's certainly worth investigating. There may be more of a difference with Boss flywheels than just clutch size.

I believe the Boss 351 flywheel was made of nodular iron, as was the Boss 302. The balance is the same CJ and Boss. Chuck

When I rebuild any engine I ALWAYS buy a new balancer due to rubber isolator will deteriorate with age sometimes a slipping outer ring and sometimes the outer ring coming off at high RPM. Everyone should look at this situation.

100% agree Bill. The two dampers in my photos above have been retired for many years. Many SFI dampers can be factory rebuild to new specifications.
