carburator2.jpgMine is acting up and ordered one, they asked me which one i had, manual choke, i know what that is, electric choke, i know what that is heat asisted choke, i think i know what that is and i think that is the one i have but i am a bit confused, i have the heat hose coming from the manifold to the back of the carburator which to me that is the heat source for the choke, but i also have the electric thingy on the right side of the carburator that pushes out the accelerator mechanism a little, what is that???

see the part with the red wire sticking out of the black sleeve? sorry to sound that dumb but,,,, i am dumb

The only dumb question around here is one that you don't ask! :)

That carb is one for an air condition equipped car. That electric plunger (left side = drivers side) with the red wire activates and pushes the idle up a little bit when the AC compressor kicks on, to overcome the drag that it puts on the engine.

On the right side, there is a cloth covered metal tube in the bottom picture. It is connected to the round spring housing for the choke. The cover for the spring is the black one marked "LEAN" and has arrows on it. As the hot air heats the spring, it expands the spring and opens the choke blade visible on the top of the carb. Also, see the tin shield around the choke spring housing? It has a "cradle" on it that holds one of the heater hoses against the black spring housing cover, also to help with heating the spring inside.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Motoarts, you are great!! i hope they send me the correct one, i showed them this pics and they went from there, but i got the feeling they did not get the one with the asist for the AC, will see in the morning::))

I just found out that the brand they got for me is a tomco, never heard of that one, i tought i was getting the original, anybody heard of them??

Mex-

These carbs were manufactured by Ford's Motorcraft division, there aren't any 'new' carbs out there.

Most likely you have or will be supplied with a 'rebuilt' or 're-manufactured' carb.

Tomco is likely the operation that rebuilds used carbs.

Did whoever is getting you the 'new' carb ask you for a core? If so, that means they want your old carb back when you pick up the new one so that they can send it back to the rebuilder...

Also, I agree that the carb you have pictured is a 'heat-assisted' choke vs. a manual or electric. Also, as MotoArts has said, that is a fast idle dashpot or solenoid used to increase idle RPM when the AC is on...
