I use my hoist around the shop for moving a lot more than just engines. (You ever try and move a cast iron powerglide?)

So in a moment of clarity I decided that I would convert my hoist to air over hydraulic operation.  It could not be easier, two bolts, it dropped in perfectly and it works great.  I got the ram through Northern tool

though this one is a bit cheaper, it looks to be manufactured pretty much identical other than the painting of the resevoir

If you pull engines more than just once in a blue moon, this is a handy upgrade, and everything works as normal when the air is not available

I don't know how I missed this when you first posted it, thanks for resurrecting it David.

Nice upgrade Jeff, thanks. The ram on mine leaks around the pump piston and I haven't been able to find the correct seal, so I've made it, but it doesn't last that long, so I've been thinking about a new ram. The one from HF doesn't cost that much more than a mechanical one and my hoist is in good condition, so now I know how I'll take care of the problem. I've got time before I need it, so I know how I'll use the next HF 10% discount coupon.
