For me, it comes down to the fact that the 429 (and definitely the 460) have a reputation amongst the uninitiated of being a "non-performer" which is a ridiculous label if one does the research. So what exactly does one do with a 460 or more cubes? Serious question. Are they dragstrip cars or weekend cruisers, etc? Let me in on the secret.I have an extra Mach 1 I can play with instead of selling. I'm all for tons of power and torque but have never thought about doing a 4xx build. The gunfight rule is never show up with a gun whose caliber doesn't start with a 4. Could this be true for engine cubes too? :d
Essentially, you take a Cleveland architecture and "pump it up" and you got a real bear on your hands. With the available aluminum heads, intake, mini starter, etc., you are looking at something with the weight of the small blocks that has ungodly torque while keeping the RPM below 6000. You can build a relatively MILD 460 that will cruise all day and still run low 12s (or high 11s) with ease in our (so called) big bodied Mustangs.
Of course, there are some of us who (for whatever reason) want to be able to run 9s (or maybe even high 8s) in the same platform
