We are trained at work on how to use a fire extinguisher, PASS.

Last time we had a fire in the OR someone threw a cup of coffee on it.

Had a need to use an extinguisher maybe 10 years ago when a fuel

line in the Jeep's engine ruptured and caught fire. That was a dry

chemical job and what a mess. You can still see a residue on the

garage floor. Recently bought a Halotron 1 (aka Halon) from Summit

Racing. When you discharge a dry chemical it comes out in a cloud

of dust. A Halon discharge comes in a liquid stream and vaporizes

when it hits the fire. Did not know that. Water cools the material

until it will no longer support a flame. CO2 displaces the oxygen

removing one of the three factors needed for combustion. Halon

chemically interacts with the combustable material rendering it

inflammable. Did not know that. Another plus is no residue.

The only drawback, $$$, but how often do you plan to use it.

Also learned besides the three classes of fires, A B & C, there is also

D and K. First time I heard that.

Halon is heavier than air. If you inhale it, you cannot force it out of your lungs and it can be deadly.
There has been a lot of discussion about Halon, it is a CFC.

Production was banned January 1st 1994. All Halon available

today is recycled. My extinguisher uses Halotron 1, an

environmentally "friendly" replacement, for now.

my boats engine compartment has a Haylon syetem in to, that will automaticly release if it senses a fire.

I was told it could not re recharged, it would have to be replaced with a newer system.

I hope you never have to have the unit replaced.

The directions that came with mine mandate service every 12 years.

They are probably talking about Halotron 1.

2,2-Dichloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane.

Halon, bromochlorodifluoromethane, is no longer produced.

So they dropped the bromine and added a carbon atom to the mix.

Still a halogenated hydrocarbon.

I knew that organic chemistry class in college would be useful one day. 25 years later, it finally is.

Back when I went to HS in the 60's a full year of chemistry

was required along with physics, at least algebra and a language

plus English. This was at a poor country HS in Norton Ohio.
