I need help.

I have a 73 Mach 1 / 351w / FMX Trans. Nearing full restoration. I had the FMX trans rebuilt. I installed it the other day without a problem. Today i went to put the shifter linkage on and it just does not seem to fit. It seems to be right up against the crossmember. I know i have the correct linkage arm. I also have a linkage arm for a c6 that i had laying around. It also does not fit.

DIZA-7340-AA (Almost positive FMX)

D1ZA-7340-CA (C6)

Ok the crossmember comes into question. I have been reading that there are differences in between the C6 and FMX cross members. The 351w and FMX that i have in this 73 Mach 1 came out of a 70 Coupe that i bought a long time ago. The motor and tranny are not numbers matching for the coupe that it came out of. Castings on the motor and tranny are D2. The crossmemeber from that 70 is the one that i am using in the 73 mach 1.

When i purchased this 73 mach 1, it came with a 351/400mod with a C6. (obvisously not matching) I still have that cross member. IT looks identical to the one that i put in the 73.

I have seen pictures of crossmembers that have two holes in them where the mount would bolt up. I alos have seen an identical looking cross member with 3 holes. Both cross members that i have have 3 holes.

SOme people list them for sale as: C6/FMX crossmemeber

C6 Only

FMX Only

Are there differences between the c6 and FMX crossmembers for 71-73 mustangs???

Do i have the correct shift linkage?

Someone please help.

Correct. the ebay auction that Tnfaskbk posted is the same on that i have. Doesnt the c6 crossmember also have 3 points? Because im under the impression that the fmx and c6 crossmemebers look similar but are slightly different. Also notice the 3 holes in the one on ebay. i have also seen this crossmember with 2 holes in the center. So if the one listed on ebay is the one that i have, do i have the right one? The transmissilb is installed with zero fitment issues. Just having problems with the shifter linkage

Not sure but I thought I read somewhere that the C6 and FMX cross member are the same and you just turn them around for each respective trans?

Yes that is the cross meember i have. Im an idiot. Check out my new post entitled FMX Shift Lever swap. I took a look at my friends 73 Mach1 today w/ FMX. His shifter arm coming out of the trans is completely different than mine. My FMX is a 72 but it is not out of a mustang. Ill post pictures. I need to find the correct Shifter arm mechanism for my trans. Thank you guy so much for all of your help

You're not an idiot. We all do stuff like that sometimes.

lol true, its just nerve racking. I just hope i can change it without dropping out the trans completely, if i can find one at a decent price.

If the shift lever is "pointed down", the transmission is probably from a column shift car. Unmodified floor shift transmission will have the lever pointing "Up." This problem can be rectified in a couple of ways.

1) You can tear down the transmission and "adjust" the lever whereby it is pointing up.

2) You can possibly use the approach that I used with ICE (my 73 Grande that has a c6 from a Galaxy). I purchased a TCI Shift Lever (#27316) which mounted to the outside of the transmission in the upright position.

I purchased it in 2004 from a Speed Shop here in Memphis that has now closed down. The price was $24.99. I would think that it would still be available but I have not checked.

Hope this helps!

The FMX transmission above is from a column shifted 1969 LTD. The shifter lever can be changed out without dismanteling the transmission but the problem is it also has a longer tail shaft. Although a cut driveshaft can be employed, this longer tail shaft will interfere with the shifter mechanism.

Remedy - take the FMX out of my parts Grande to clean it up and reseal.

Here is a picture of an FMX ? crossmember that I have. As you can see, it has been altered in it's past. It also has no number. It came out or a 1973 Q code.
Just so no one gets confused. The cross member you are showing is a C6 cross member. The Q code car would have been a C6 not an FMX, unless it had been changed out some where in its life time.
