Hi

My car would not start today, the car has a 302 motor with a motocraft 2100 carb ,

I did the following;

1) I assumed low or no gas and put 10 gallons in but it did not start.

2) I looked in float bowl and saw it was empty and dirty so I did the long over due carb rebuild but when completed and installed still no fuel goes in it from the fuel line. (The carb runs fine when I fill it manually with fuel)

3) I blew compressed air into the main fuel line and it was clear and can hear it bubbling in the tank

4) I took fuel line off the carb to see if gas was being pumped but it was not

5) I find it hard to believe it was the fuel pump as I just bought it new 4 months ago but I took the fuel pump off and filled a cup and placed a hose from the pump intake to the cup to see if it would draw fluid, it did not work at first but when I closed the vent hole for a second with my finger it started to spurt fluid

6) I re-installed the fuel pump but it still did not work when placed in the car.

Is this just a bum fuel pump and I need to get another ?

Does the thing inside the motor that activates the mechanical fuel pump ever go bad in these 302s or is that a rarity?

I tried all the basic things and am at a loss

Any help would be appriciated

AJ

sounds like a fuel pump to me but I have seen the pump actuator break that bolts to the cam although it is rare it does happen

[/quote+2 to that!! Pull it and inspect. Pump the arm manually to see if it will pump. Sounds like the diaphram let go to me.

The eccentric is unlikely to fail-anything can happen though. With the fuel pump out you can see the eccentric in place and can verify that it is snug to the timing gear by pressing on it with a screwdriver.

I agree it sounds like a ruptured diaphragm in the fuel pump

Hi Guys thank you for the replies, I returned the new fuel pump as it was still under warrenty and got a replacement , I installed it and the car started right up as soon as the bowl filled, I'm happy I did not have to pull the front of the motor to replace the pin that turns the fuel cam.

It seems odd that a new pump would fail after 4 months , anyone else buy one that was defective or crapped out after a couple of months?

Quality control is not something the Chinese manufacturing sector is known for doing well. I'm glad you are up and running. Chuck

You must not replace a lot of parts...for me, it is odd to get a part that fits, that works, that lasts.

What is silly to me is, at least as far as I am concerned, I don't mind PAYING for a good part.
