How to keep your cowl from rusting

No idea. I bought the car exactly 2 years ago this month, from a salvage yard in SoCal. It’s funny, I cleaned and inspected the cowl on the passenger side because I was going to place the ECU for my FI on that kick panel, and wanted to make sure it wasn’t going to rain on it. My friend has one of those scopes to look in, and amazingly, no rust at all.

But for some reason, I didn’t look on the drivers side. So, since I decided to rebuild the door hinges, I removed both fenders. The drivers side was packed with dirt, so I decided to now clean that side of the cowl, and through that drain hole on the side, I see this round end, looked like a big nut of some kind. Wouldn’t fit through the hole, so I pushed it away from there, and in the light, a screwdriver.

And, no rust!
 
I tried to put a screwdriver in my cowl 40 years ago. I was screwing something under the dash in my 69 Mustang and the screwdriver slipped and punctured a hole in the metal. Thought nothing more about it. I could never figure out why my carpet got wet. 20 years later I discovered my drivers floor pan needed replacing because of rust in my otherwise rust-free car. Apparently, I punctured my cowl underneath. Sure, the cowl didn't rust but if you puncture it make sure you puncture the floor also.

I've got that beat. Found these factory shears inside the upper part of the front driver's seat in one of my cars. The seat covers were factory, and the seat had never been out of the car. I cut my hand trying to get them out!

Literally could have been a pain in the ***.
