HP Power Steering Hose Insulation Needed.

I'm hoping that new material should be pliable enough to go over the end fitting. I mean, they sell it as a separate piece. Also, as it's supposed to be oil resistant, some "lube" would help............ and no, I don't mean KY!

Out of curiosity, what's the purpose of the insulation? My car doesn't have any, but it also doesn't route over the brace like yours does (which looks cool).

It was just a 71 thing, maybe into early 72. The thought is it was done for cooling the fluid. The insulation tubing I think is more as a vibration damper to stop the hose from banging on the brace. Who knows what Ford engineers were thinking. They did a lot of dumb stuff back in the day............. well, they still do today. I worked with "engineers" for nearly 40 years. Some ain't too bright I can tell you.

My guess is that the foam insulation is just there to protect the hose from getting damaged by the constant movement of the hoses as the engine moves around on the motor mounts as you drive it. The pressure hose sits on top of the shock tower brace and return one hits the drivers side shock tower on the side. I would imagine that without the insulation the hose itself would be more likely to get damaged by all the inevitable rubbing between the hose and the shock tower braces and/or the shock tower.

I looked at that too Don, but yes, I do want it to look authentic. I will go to NPD while I'm down in Florida and pick up (or at least look at) the sleeve they are selling.

I installed new hoses on the Boss351 I’m working on,the insulation was separate from the hose.
FWIW I had to remove the hose from the steering box to get it installed . The insulation would not go over the pump fitting.
I think for the price of the 2 NPD part with the insulation pre installed I go that way.
I wouldn’t want any power steering fluid inside the insulation ,I think it would constantly seep out and make the insulation turn either mushy or dry it out and make it rock hard.

Thanks for that info. Actually when I was in Florida, I went to NPD but totally forgot about the tubing, so it is on the list for next time I order. Good to know it would not go over the pump end. That is what I was hoping for. For now, it is what it is.
