Muffler hanger

Has anyone used this muffler hanger? I’m trying to imagine in my head how it mounts? I understand the big end attaches to the end cap of the muffler, assuming you have those square blocks welded to the end of your muffler, but where does the metal bracket attach? I’m assuming to the floor pan, but not sure where that is. Does anyone have these on their car and have pics? Also, what other muffler hangers are folks using? I’m going from single to dual 2.25” exhaust on my 73 and see that’s a common upgrade. Thanks again for the help, Steve.

The L shaped part at the bottom of the photo that bolts onto the floor pan of the car. If your car had dual exhaust there would be holes in the floor pan to hold the brackets in place. You can see good photos of the brackets and where they mount on the 429 Megasite here:

The factory mufflers would have 2 brackets with one hole in each of them, and you would bolt on the mufflers to the the "Y" part of the bracket which has to holes on each side (top of your photo). The "U" area in between the bolt holes is where the muffler tube would pass through. In my car the "Y" bracket is welded onto the Flowmaster mufflers, as they do not have the OEM brackets to bolt them on.

So, to use these with aftermarket mufflers, you weld the bracket to the muffler? Does someone make a pipe clamp that includes tabs to bolt the hanger to? That would be sweet.

The hanger adapters are obsolete from what I can find. All aftermarket exhaust manufacturers used to offer them, and they were on the shelf at every muffler shop. I have a sample that came off a parts car and plan on making some soon.

Maybe? Funny story, I use to work for Walker Mfg at a muffler and pipe factory in arc; college gig, second shift on the muffler line.

WCCC have the weld-on mounting tabs, too.

But to use them at the correct location you have to use a OE like pipe and muffler system. If you use aftermarket or custom made mufflers and pipes you will have some difficulty to mount them correctly. I fabricated my own hangers, using Flowmaster Mufflers and 2,5 custom made pipes.

Yea I noticed, most aftermarket mufflers end caps are flush with the end of the can; the welded on tabs extend out too much to align with the hanger. They don’t look like much to make, are they like 10 gauge or ?

I welded bolts onto my mufflers in place of the bosses. I welded the heads on with the threads sticking out so they worked like studs. I can't get any pictures at the moment.

Hemi, do you think that came off a Ford or other? Did you pull it from a car you had or from a salvage yard? I wonder if it’s an out of production Walker part? That is exactly what I’m looking for.

Came off a 71 M-code Cougar XR-7. It's definitely an aftermarket part. I'll be making some this week, so PM me if anyone wants a set or two.

A couple of years ago when I swapped a set of Flowmaster 40's for a set of Flowmaster FX and added new custom bent tail pipes, the shop guy cut the tabs off the old 40's and welded them onto the new mufflers. Not the best weld job, but it works.

Hangers are very personal IMO. In a total stock exhaust app the ones hemikiller shows may work fine but maybe not if running headers, H or X pipes, etc., and getting the left side to clear the fuel line out of the tank, and finally the end caps to look uniform and set right. Creativity and not rushing is a must again IMO and final tacwelding while it's on the cars sprung weight before taking it all apart to weld up complete. My example is hanging stainless everything into and out of magnaflows using dynomax hanger kits and fabbing them up to achieve the previous concepts I mentioned. I hope this helps with some of you!

I re-used the rear pipe hangers, refurbished with a section of heavy duty truck radiator hose



and fabricated two brackets to fit the original muffler hanger holes. The exhaust shop then used hangers from the brackets and welded to the mufflers.
