my rear end is getting loose and making noise

My Car
1971 conv. 250 inline 6 black int. orange paint

so my differential has 130,000 miles on it  getting some big play when i rote the tires back and forth and whining when om of and on the gas its a ford 8 inch 

what are my options for the fix 

do the ring and pinion wear out or just  the bearings 

do they sell bearing kits  

who would rebuild the the punkin head  a local machine shop  if i remove it 

 or a transmission shop

any help with this i will be thankful

i just want stock parts no race

Most common problem with the 8" & 9" is pinion bearing failure. Much of that is caused by corrosion damage when the cars sit for an extended time due to moisture.

Pretty much every part of an 8" or 9" rear is available in the aftermarket.

Being that you're in SoCal, I can't imagine it being too tough to find a shop that can handle the 8" rebuild. If you'd rather have a plug-n-play solution, there's a guy "TJ" on eBay that sells complete reman 8" rears with new gears and a trac loc. Gear ratios are your choice. Lot of good feedback about him on the VMF.

The hardest part of rebuilding a differential is removing and replacing the bearings, a press is needed. Other than that, they are pretty straightforward, especially 8" and 9". A good dial indicator and a dial or beam type inch-pound torque wrench are also needed. A large foot-pound torque wrench is also needed for the pinion nut. A fixture to hold them while wrenching on them is nice, but not necessary. Pulling the third member will make you wish you had spent more time on the weight bench, that sucker is heavy. Good quality bearings are a must.

Just rebuilt my 9".  Built a small cradle out of a couple of 4x4's to let the pumpkin drop on to.   The rebuild is not so hard if you have the right tools.  Picked up a couple of video's from Bad Shoe Productions http://www.badshoeproductions.com/ on how to do the rebuild.  While your at it now is the time to replace the seals in the  rear end also.

 
Norm I have a spare 8" center section. Not sure of it's condition. I did drive the car around the block but don't recall any noise or not.
wow that is a nice offer . i found a shop called MIT DRIVE TRAIN SPECIALIST he quotes a price if i bring it in   

bearing kit 141$

labor 105$

and if needed ring and pinion  set 175$

421$+tax 

he said that the ring and pinion hardley fail 

so without ring set its 246$+ tax 

sounds like a fair price to me

I agree, very reasonable price, especially if you don't already have all the tools needed for the job. However, if you're like me, I'm always looking for an excuse to buy another tool :)
