NOS Roof Rail Foam Seal

All,

I am helping a friend of my move some 1971- 1973 NOS parts and we ran across a new NOS roof rail for the driver’s side fastbacks. I am sharing to everyone As you can see in the pictures, the foam seal is much thicker than available stuff. The Foam is 1/4"×5/8".

As you can see, the stuff I bought from West Coast Classic Cougar is 1 inch wide x 1/8 inch thick. As we can see, this is not correct.

Mine did not came off that good as on yours to check that. But I have bought the repros too, from Don. As often the repros do not match exactly the originals. But concerning the roof rail seals you have to seal them extra as mentioned in different threads - with the foam seal only there could be leaks as original from the factory too...

I would forget the foam and put either 3-M windshield strip or the calking strip like is used under fenders on the older cars. 3-M makes or you can get at home store like Lowe's. It does not dry out and works. My Mach 1 leaked from day one in the roof rail above the rear window had two inches of water in my floor first week I owned it. They could not find leak kept working on the window and I found and just put silicone in at that time. The strip caulk or ribbon caulk is a much better fit.

The 3-M is an adhesive and sealer to hold windshield in. The caulk is more of just a sealer.

The other place with foam that leaks is the upper header on convertibles. They put foam in there at least 1/2" thick and it just goes away over time then water comes in and goes everywhere.

Foam was their cheapest quickest fix so they used it.

I used the Dark gray body sealer from Ohio Mustang Supply to insert into the crevasses of know leak areas.

WELL when you want it correct ...... THE BEST option IMO is the company that makes the seals for Mopars in Detroit !! They sell on ebay and have a 3/4 inch by 1/8 open cellulose seal that excepts a slurry of tar (I dilute roofers tar and dip them).
