Opinion on Magnums 500 wheels

I have seen many many 1971-73 Mach 1 's Coupes and convertibles with Magnum 500 wheels which were optional on models with competition suspension.

Do you guys believe that these are the best looking for the 71-73 stangs?

I like the forged wheels but they are exclusive for the 1973 model year.

My project 1971 Mach 1 came with hub caps with trim rings however dont know if it was original to the car or not.

So whats your opinion on the Magnum 500? Are they the best looking wheel for our model year Mustangs?

If you going for the stock look I like the Magnum 500 wheels for the 71/72's. As a purist, I like the Forged Aluminum for the 73's, but the Magnums look great on the 73's too. With that said, I also like the look of the hubcap and trim ring as well as the Sports Wheel Hubcaps. Pretty much a matter of personal taste.

Both yes and no.

IMHO all depends on the overall look of the car. Some look great with them, others look better with the dog dishes and trim rings, then again, others look good with a classic 5 spoke.

I have test fit my original Magnum 500s on mine and I think they kinda sucked. Seems like the lowered suspension on mine simply needs those bigger wheels or mybe its the yellow paint that does not go well with the look of the wheel....

I like them both...And i kept the originals up front and got bit wider slots on the back.....But they look stock in the back atleast..lol...I think the only reason i refuse to put magnum 500's on is cause most classic stangs got them now...And a few told me they would get rid of what i got for magnum 500's,,,Mine came stock with aluminum slotted mags....And i like being a little dif ...But tires can make them too...Im getting the tires im posting below with my next change..Raised white letters look so cool on them..lol

I'm a big fan of the Magnums. I do think the hub caps have there place. If I could find some 15" wheels and trim rings from a Boss 351 I would go that route to be different. You cant go wrong Magnum 500s on 71-73 Mustangs.

I like the look of the magnums and would love to have some 15" on my car....but I was looking at the thread of the rims and tires and I'm thinking I might go for some classic look torque thrusts....and if I do I'll most likely go 17"

I also think the magnum`s look great....as said earlier...you cant go wrong with magnum`s.

I think they are available in 17" too?

I like magnum 500's BUT... the 16 and 17" versions do not look right proportionally. Also it is important to have someone that knows how to balance them by using an adapter and not just off the center hole.

A friend of my mechanic has some mags to sell.

My '71 Grande came with the standard rims and hubcaps.

The car also came with competition suspension so mags

would not be out of place. Hmmmmm.

I wanted to keep the low brow "sleeper" look as the car

is an M-code with toploader, but mags may be ok.

magnum 500's really do look great on our cars. And most other mustangs. but for me I wanted something different. I don't no the percentage of mustangs with mag 5's but it must be huge. Then Again I'm looking more for a day 2 look myself.

I absolutely love the 500's... but I have a 73 with the forged wheels and they really fit the car and they look great. I wouldn't change them for anything. I would like to be able to find some replacements for the center hubs but that is pretty far down on the priority list for upcoming projects.

I've never seen an American middle 60s to middle 70s car of any flavor that didn't look good with a Magnum 500 style wheel (or variation) on it. But wheels are very much like audio speakers and things that go bang. It depends on what you like (except the HOT WHEELS 20"+ rims). Chuck

I love Magnums put them on my 73! I wanted 15x7 and the 73 slots are 14x6.

I like the mag 500 but it seems like everybody has them and I'm not sure about the quality of the chrome. I have orig slots on both of my 73's. A larger size would be nice. I thought I might try Detroit vintage wheels if I decide to change. Just saw the prices I think larger slots.

for some odd reason I'm partial to the 500's But on my 67 Convertible I run the Style Steel Wheels that came with it. IF you know you Mustang history 67 DID NOT come with those wheels...mine DID!

Back in the day...Chrome magnums were very rare. Brushed aluminum magnums with brushed aluminum beauty rims were a little more popular. And the forged wheels were properly even more popular. Maybe someone has the numbers.

Let's face it. Our cars look good no matter what type of wheel is on it. Our cars even look good regardless who driving it.

Good luck...you already got a 71 Mustang...hard to mess it up with a set of wheels.

I'm kinda on the fence about Magnum 500s. They are indeed some of the coolest factory wheels available - WAY better than hub caps and rings (IMHO)... but they are done to death. Everybody [just about] seems to have them. Blah.

Personally, I like something in a 5-spoke design - some look better bigger, some look better smaller. The rims I want are Torque Thrust IIs, wrapped by BFGs... but my mind is open to the Torque Thrust D, Cragar S/S, AR 200 - "Daisy/Coke Bottles," or some Centerlines. I'm more into the 'old school restomod' look than the new larger diameter wheels.

Interestingly enough - rims seem to have the biggest visual impact on a car (short of changing paint colors) - swap on a set of nice, shiny, wider rims on low profile tires from a set of hubcaps and whitewall pizza cutters, and the change is drastic!
