My Car
1972 Mach1 Cobra Jet 351
saved from becoming
"Eleanor look-a-like"
To be restored back to original
Hello,

What I wanted to ask was, is there any way of finding out who the previous owners of my car were? In England we can pay £5.00 ($3.50) to the DVLA and they send a list of previous owners and when the car was sold and any changes that happened, is there any Department that does this in the US? Also, are there any records that you guys may know of that would give me any more info.

My car was exported from the States in 1980 so spent most of her life over here, and I know that info from 40 years ago may not exist, but it would be a real achievement if I could find some history of her earlier life.

Just a quick update on my restoration, the engine is coming together, I am sourcing parts from all over the US, shipping bill keeps growing!!

The car is in a friends garage, (I tried working on it at home, but had to keep pushing it out on the road to work on it, my garage wasnt built for a 'Stang),so we can get started on the body and dreaded tin worm.

I will stop rambling now and get back to Ebay to try and find more missing parts, look forward to hearing from you

Martin

I don't know of any way to get previous owner info on cars here in the US. Good luck with your car & parts sourcing.

We have something called CarFax on newer vehicles that will perform a search for registrations and accidents, or dealer service, but I'm pretty sure it would only be for the last 10 years or so. I don't see anyone going to the trouble of digitizing old DMV (Dept of Motor Vehicle) records. Good luck on your restoration!

As one who has done a lot of "research" on my ancestry, I think your best approach would be to contact the individual (or entity) from whom you purchased the Mustang and go backwards from there.

I know of no formalize source that would meet your stated need.

Due to privacy concerns bla bla bla most states will not send you any owner history info. However, a there are a few states that will send you info if you are the current owner (of course not sure how that would work since the car is not in the US). I have also requested from at least one state that I knew was registered in that state at one time and I was even able to get a copy of the title. It was one of the fifty sprint convertibles and I was able to track down the current owner from that info so I was working from the past to the present.

Anyway - the previous and 1st owner of my sprint was Army Col. Hagood.

I would suggest you get a deluxe marti report to start with. It will tell you when the car was built and where it was sold at. Might be a good place to start. You can buy it at www.martiauto.com

Yeah - maybe it was Erdman Ford. ;)

I agree! If the Dealership where it was originally sold is still in business you may be able to coax someone there to search their records.
