My remote mirror (72) needs new glass.  I don't see a replacement glass for the remote mirrors in the usual Mustang aftermarket.

Anybody had this issue and solved it?

Seems to me that years ago I went to a glass shop and had a mirror piece cut. ?  Anything special about exterior mirror glass?

Thanks

Our car's mirrors are way too small. Some time ago, I posted on a larger convex right side mirror I built for my Mach 1. I enlarged the passenger side by a 1/2" and the drivers by about the same. I used aftermarket replacement mirrors and had them cut at the local glass and mirror company. I'm useless a posting links to past posts (something I need my grandson to show me how to do!!), but a search should find it. It would be around July or August last year. I can put up a pic or two.

As for the drivers mirror, it is not as simple as the passenger side. I cut an aluminum backer from .040" sheet stock, then had the glass cut to that and "glued" it on with my fav product, "Automotive Goop" On mine, I actually double side taped the larger mirror to the old one as I was not sure if I wanted to sacrifice an original good mirror. It just sticks out of the housing a tiny bit. I'll try to find the posts if you're interested.

These pictures are from when I tried to work out the largest possible glass depending on the mirror body. I found these do vary quite a bit which appears to be due to manufacturing processes. the one with the tape is the enlarged drivers side. The passenger side has the script. The back side picture shows how much bigger the backer plate is to the original mount.

Hope that gives food for thought.

Nice, I agree the originals are small and could be enlarged as shown.

Good job !!!

Thanks, Jay
Thank you Jay. Too small is exactly why I designed and made these mirrors. The right side convex mirror means I can actually SEE the entire lane beside me, not just a part of it. Even the Scott Drake convex mirror that is available is only the same size as the factory glass, therefore only marginally better. In one of my posts, I attached a download sketch for the templates if you're able to find it. If not PM me and I'll email it to you with detailed instructions. They won't be cheap, but will be worth it.

Try West Coast Cougar, they have both left and right sides. They also have a video on doing the replacements.

Thanks, Jay

Thanks.  Didn't think about them, though I've purchased from them before.  I'll give them a call.  The mirror on their website that matches my dimensions (4 1/2 x 2 7/8) has a description that reads "Precision cut replacement lens for any Ford product with sport mirror on the passenger side. This fits any FoMoCo Sport mirror 69 and up, right hand only."  Kinda confusing...  I need driver side glass...

Andy72, While I'm NOT 100% sure as I don't have a spare driver mirror to compare, I think you'll find that both sides are the same. The right side base plate I have is symmetrical, so it follows that the glass will fit either way up, therefore it should also fit the driver side as I'm pretty sure the base plates are the same dimensions, just the mounts to the cases are different....... obviously!

Perhaps you're looking for originality, maybe concours and that's fine, but if not why not put in the largest area of glass possible. That's just m take on it, but it's your car, your way.

Geoff.
