It looks as if a Mercury (Ford) Capri had a torrid affair with a Chevrolet Vega - and as frightening as that may sound, the result looks quite fantastic (though the '68 concept clay model for the fastback is without parallel - it's stunning: http://shnack.com/gallery/photo/139/)
Haven't found the slightest backstory on this particular clay design online; would anyone happen to have insight on it? Given the date, I would be very surprised if it was a concept for the 2-door hardtop, given that the roofline of the Shelby prototype from December 1968 is almost bang-on identical with the production '71:
