I just bought a 1971 Mach 1 and the speedometer doesn't work. I pulled out the the dash and instrument cluster today and then pulled out the speedometer. The speedometer action feels good and when I spin the speedo mechanism the speedo gauge moves. The speedo cable however is just a wire at the end, see photo below. It doesn't seem to have anything that would engage the speedometer. Am I thinking about this correctly?

The end of your speedo cable going into the speedometer is just a squared end of the cable; nothing fancy. From the pictures, yours looks to be a little messed up. It may not be fitting in the speedometer properly.
Have you loosened the cable from the transmission end to see if the cable spins in the cable housing? That would be my next move.

Sheriff41 - I agree with you, the end of the cable looks to have been broken off. It's not squared off, it's just metal wire. When i saw it I could tell that would not turn anything. I think I will order a new cable.
