Driving home from work today, noticed engine was louder than normal, with some rattling.  Definitely heard some metal rattling around or something, smelled a little heat too, so I pulled over to a Kroger and the engine kinda sputtered out.  Wont start.  Im thinking a throttle bar went lose? Any ideas that could help me? How do I fix a throttle bar? Can I fix the bar temporarily then start it up again and drive it to my repair guy or do you think I could fix this on my own?  Seems simple.

Here are some pictures.

Hi. The throttle is connected. The throttle is the bar with the spring. The bar is hollow and there is a wire inside. When you press the gas the wire is pulled towards the firewall, compressing the spring. If the wire inside breaks the pedal will fall to the floor.

The bar you see with the bushing is for the transmission 'kick down'. It is not connected and it doesn't appear your carb has the linkage for it. This bar not being connected will not impact the ability for the car to start.

The symptoms you describe do not sound good. First thing is to pour a small amount of gas down the carb (maybe just a table spoon). Put the air cleaner back on and try to start. If it runs for a moment or two you have a fuel issue. If it doesn't you probably have a spark or mechanical issue.

When you say "won't start",

Are there no unusual sounds during cranking or like if the starter needs to do much more work than usual?

Do you get random explosions or totally dead, if you do the "Will e" test ?

As Will said that is the automatic "kick down". While you need to put it is order, you need to determine WHY it got hot! (Cooling system, themostat, water pump or even "frozen alternator stopping belt)

You will need to inspect and return (with photos) in you have to. Confirm it didn't jump timing, eat a cam gear (looks stock) etc etc.
