For the same reason regarding toilet seat positions and whether toilet paper goes over or under.  *sigh*

Not an issue in California.

New construction has vacancy detectors.  You walk into a room, depress the light switch and light turns on.  Trick is the vacancy detector will turn it back off automatically if it does not detect motion.  

Just pack up and move to California, Problem solved!
